Job Summary:
In collaboration with the physician, provides care to new or established patients. Demonstrates autonomy through patient evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow‑up care. Orders testing as deemed necessary, interprets results, and prescribes appropriate medication and therapeutic regimens within the scope of practice of the nurse practitioner. These roles, undertaken in cooperation with nursing, staff physicians and other department staff, may include triage, telephone communication and patient education.
- Assess and establish a presumptive diagnosis and implement treatment plans for the patient population.
- Enter accurate and complete entries into the electronic medical record; order and interpret diagnostic testing and make appropriate consults.
- Prescribe, adjust or discontinue medications or therapies as appropriate.
- Evaluate and report to the collaborating physician any circumstances or approaches to medical management or test results that present a significant risk to the patient's health or well‑being.
- Perform procedures within the scope of practice of the nurse practitioner license.
- Communicate with collaborative physician, patient, PCP and referring staff through telephone or other means of correspondence.
- Act as the patient’s advocate by providing safe, ethical care and health education in a language that they can understand.
- Interpret and follow policies and guidelines to define procedures and meet goals and deadlines.
- Work at other locations through the consult liaison service, either in person or via telemedicine at the primary site.
- Education:
Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant or Master’s Degree in Nurse Practitioner (Required). - Certification & License:
Basic Life Support Certification;
Certified Physician Assistant with National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. For nurse practitioners, PMHNP certification is required. - Qualifications:
Demonstrated psychiatric experience; CAQ in Psychiatry or CAQ eligibility strongly preferred. - Competencies:
Autonomy in patient evaluation and management; proficiency in prescribing and interpreting diagnostic testing; ability to communicate complex information in an understandable manner; adherence to policies and guidelines. - Additional competencies will be considered essential as outlined in department orientation.
