Licensed Practical Nurse
OverviewDBHDS operates 12 facilities to support individuals across the state. This role is at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72‑bed Joint Commission accredited state mental health facility in Danville, VA.
LocationSouthern Virginia Mental Health Institute — Danville, VA.
Compensation and Benefits- Hiring Range: $53,564 negotiable based on relevant years of experience.
- Pay Band: 3
- Shift Differentials
- 1st shift weekend: $3.00 per hour
- 2nd shift weekday: $3.50 per hour
- 2nd shift weekend/holidays: $3.50 per hour
- 3rd shift weekday: $2.50 per hour
- 3rd shift weekend/holidays: $4.00 per hour
- Sign‑on bonus: $3,000 for new LPNs who remain for 1 year.

- Provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, using skills appropriate to level of training and competency based on patient’s individual treatment plan.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living.
- Teach and encourage self‑care skills.
- Work day‑shift floats (7:00 AM–7:30 PM) and one 12‑hour shift per week; may be required to work overtime.
- Work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
- Complete a consecutive 4‑week New Employee Orientation; hours 8:00 AM–5:00 PM with one‑hour lunch break on week 1.
- Graduation from an approved Licensed Practical Nursing program.
- Licensed (or ability to become licensed) and in good standing as an LPN in Virginia.
- Current driver’s license in good standing, active throughout employment.
- Knowledge of theory and practice of nursing and psychiatric nursing.
- Successful completion of BLS, Therapeutic Options (TO) and other required training upon employment.
- Effective interpersonal communication, team‑focused care, and professional approach.
- Experience in psychiatric, acute care, long‑term or correctional settings.
- Veterans and people with National Service experience.
- Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
- Fingerprint‑based criminal history check, drug screen and reference checks required for selected candidate.
- May be required to disclose immunization status for infection prevention and/or management of outbreaks; new recruits must disclose and provide proof of vaccination if fully vaccinated.
