Job Duties

The Nurse Shift Supervisor (NSS) works the 3:00‑11:30 p.m. shift, overseeing patient care for up to 72 census patients and supervising 65‑95 nursing employees.

Responsibilities include:

  • Plan, direct and coordinate medical and health services for a psychiatric hospital operating 24/7
  • Ensure administrative presence in the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Respond to emergency codes, oversee admissions and discharge processes, and manage patient transportation needs
  • Receive staff call‑ins and oversee staffing and scheduling needs for the shift
  • Assist with nursing staff development and problem‑solve with electronic health record and nursing scheduling systems
  • Deliver a 24‑hour nursing report
  • Coordinate centralized departmental leadership to manage resources on a shift‑by‑shift basis in alignment with facility standards and policies
  • Ensure quality patient care meeting accrediting agency standards (TJC, CMS, OIG, etc.) through medication administration, treatment provision, and direct‑care services on adult and geriatric units
  • Incorporate recovery concepts and DEFUSE interventions into daily practice for all patient populations from pre‑admission through discharge
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and departments, including medical, clinical, human resources, and administrative staff
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed or license‑eligible Registered Nurse in good standing in Virginia; license must remain valid throughout employment
  • Valid driver’s license maintained throughout employment
  • Previous nursing management or Shift Administrator experience
  • Extensive work experience in psychiatric nursing
  • Comprehensive knowledge of psychiatric nursing principles to provide care for adult populations
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and schedule nursing staff efficiently
  • Proficient use of electronic health records, nursing scheduling, communication, and reporting systems
  • Leadership in emergency code interventions
  • Decision‑making with authority and ownership, appropriate consultation, and problem‑solving using data
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; teaching, motivating, and delegating effectively
  • Optimistic handling of multiple priorities through time‑management and organizational skills
  • Assertive intervention in clinical crises or workplace conflict
  • Construction of constructive relationships with disciplines, departments, and the public
  • Resolution of complaints from individuals, families, visitors, and employees
  • Fiscal judgment in resource utilization
  • Recognition of hazardous situations and peripheral abilities
  • Expert implementation of the Nursing Process for adult populations
  • Professional creation and presentation of written documents and reports
  • Direct infection prevention and control practices and daily application of standards
  • Implementation of TJC, CMS, OIG and other regulatory/accrediting standards
  • Work in a secure, locked environment with acute‑symptom patients and forensic/legal involvement
  • Physical demands: repetitive walking/standing, bending, lifting, reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport, and assist in activities of daily living
  • Flexible schedule, overtime in staffing emergencies, inclement weather, and time‑adjusted work schedule throughout the week
  • Completion of Therapeutic Options Training and CPR, maintained during employment
Additional Considerations
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Experience as a Registered Nurse in psychiatric, acute care, long‑term, or correctional settings
  • Veteran status and National Service experience
