Compensation & Incentives
  • Up to a $25,000 bonus for RN new to state service and remain with the facility for 2 years.
  • $15,000 sign‑on bonus awarded to new hires to state service with a one‑year written agreement.
  • Additional $10,000 retention bonus awarded to new hires hired after December 10, 2023; paid out one year after hire date with a one‑year written agreement.
  • Shift differentials: 1st shift weekend $5.50 per hour; 2nd shift‑weekday $5.50 per hour, 2nd shift weekend/holidays $6.00 per hour; 3rd shift‑weekday $4.00 per hour, 3rd shift weekend/holidays $7.00 per hour.

Job Description

This is an entry-level position for Registered Nurses (RN) who are new graduates or have minimal RN experience. The RN will assess patients’ physical and mental condition and collaborate with patients and other team members to identify needs and design individualized person‑centered plans of care with the aim of increasing psychosocial and recovery skills for individuals with mental illnesses and dual disorders.

The RN will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72‑bed, Joint Commission‑accredited state mental health facility in Danville, VA.

Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care to patients in a 12‑hour night shift (7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.) on a non‑rotating Pitman schedule; may be required to work overtime and weekends on a rotating basis.
  • Safely implement the use of seclusion and restraints, including knowledge of physical and emotional risk factors of patients.
  • Complete a consecutive 4‑week New Employee Orientation for on‑the‑job training.
  • Maintain effective interpersonal communication skills and a professional, team‑focused approach.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate patient care utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric and physical disorders, and cultural needs.
  • Delegate, supervise, and evaluate nursing processes to solve complex problems.
  • Successfully complete BLS, Therapeutic Options (TO), and other required training upon employment.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a registered nurse program.
  • Current and in good standing RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or license eligible; multi‑state compact endorsement accepted.
  • Valid driver’s license required and must remain active throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of psychiatric nursing.
  • Knowledge and skills related to psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery models.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience as an RN in a psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long‑term, or correctional setting.
  • Veterans and individuals with National Service experience.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
