Job DutiesJoin our team of Registered Nurses that makes a difference. Work the night shift (7:00 pm – 7:30 am) RN float pool on a 12‑hour shift, non‑rotating Pitman schedule, and rotate weekends. Completion of a 4‑week New Employee Orientation is required.
Compensation includes up to a $25,000 bonus for nurses new to state service who remain with the facility for two years. A $15,000 sign‑on bonus is awarded to new hires with a one‑year written agreement. An additional $10,000 retention bonus is available to hires after December 10, 2023, paid one year after hire with a written agreement.
Shift Differentials- 1st shift weekend – $5.50 per hour
- 2nd shift weekday – $5.50 per hour; 2nd shift weekend/holidays – $6.00 per hour
- 3rd shift weekday – $4.00 per hour; 3rd shift weekend/holidays – $7.00 per hour

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services supports individuals by promoting recovery, self‑determination, and wellness. DBHDS operates 12 facilities, including behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute is a 72‑bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility.
ResponsibilitiesProvide advanced nursing care for patients with psychiatric disorders in accordance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulations. Safely implement use of seclusion/ restraints, applying knowledge of physical and emotional risk factors. Perform duties on a 12‑hour shift, non‑rotating schedule, with potential overtime and weekend work.
Minimum Qualifications- Experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Current, in‑good standing Registered Nurse license in Virginia; license‑eligible or multi‑state compact endorsement accepted.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Knowledge of psychiatric nursing theory and practice.
- Experience with psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery models.
- Completion of BLS, Therapeutic Options (TO), and other required training.
- Effective interpersonal communication, team‑focused care, professional approach.
- Ability to plan, implement, evaluate care using pharmacology, psychiatric and physical disorder knowledge, and cultural sensitivity.
- Delegation, supervision, and evaluation of nursing processes to solve complex problems.
- Experience in a psychiatric, acute care, long‑term, or correctional setting.
- Veteran status or National Service experience.
- Bilingual proficiency Spanish and English.
Successful fingerprint‑based criminal history check, drug screen, and reference checks are required. A disability certificate may be required for certain positions. Employees may be required to disclose immunization status.
