Job Duties

The Security Services Department is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff  responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring entrances to the facility and grounds (interior and exterior) to enforce compliance with SVMHI and DBHDS policies.
  • Maintaining a safe and secure environment, limiting contraband entry and patient elopement risks.
  • Serving as a DI-201 facility investigator, conducting unbiased investigations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of clients when assigned by the Facility Director.
  • Conducting walking rounds, intervening, restraining, and transporting physically aggressive or combative patients as needed.
  • Completing facility-sponsored TOVA (behavior management program) training.
  • Operating a motor vehicle safely when required for responses.
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, visitors, patients, law enforcement, and the public.
  • Rendering credible testimony in a court of law.
  • Performing duties during four 7‑hour shifts, including Sunday to Wednesday, 4 pm – 11:30 pm (30 min lunch), or as scheduled by the security supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license without court‑ordered restrictions, active throughout employment.
  • Valid Virginia security guard license or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment; license must remain active.
  • High‑school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to work independently with sound judgment, integrity, and tact.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including accurate report writing.
  • Physical ability to walk rounds, restrain, and transport patients.
  • Prior experience in a psychiatric healthcare, acute care, long‑term, or correctional setting is preferred.
  • Training or experience in Police Science, Security, Law Enforcement, or Corrections is an advantage.
  • Veteran status and National Service experience encouraged.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience as a Security Officer in a psychiatric healthcare facility.
  • Experience in a correctional setting.
  • Any prior training in security, law enforcement, or related fields.
Legal and Safety Information
  • Successful fingerprint‑based criminal history check, drug screen, and reference checks are required.
  • Employees may be required to disclose immunization status for infection prevention.
