Job DutiesThe Security Services Department is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff responsibilities include:
- Monitoring entrances to the facility and grounds (interior and exterior) to enforce compliance with SVMHI and DBHDS policies.
- Maintaining a safe and secure environment, limiting contraband entry and patient elopement risks.
- Serving as a DI-201 facility investigator, conducting unbiased investigations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of clients when assigned by the Facility Director.
- Conducting walking rounds, intervening, restraining, and transporting physically aggressive or combative patients as needed.
- Completing facility-sponsored TOVA (behavior management program) training.
- Operating a motor vehicle safely when required for responses.
- Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, visitors, patients, law enforcement, and the public.
- Rendering credible testimony in a court of law.
- Performing duties during four 7‑hour shifts, including Sunday to Wednesday, 4 pm – 11:30 pm (30 min lunch), or as scheduled by the security supervisor.
- Valid driver’s license without court‑ordered restrictions, active throughout employment.
- Valid Virginia security guard license or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment; license must remain active.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent required.
- Ability to work independently with sound judgment, integrity, and tact.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including accurate report writing.
- Physical ability to walk rounds, restrain, and transport patients.
- Prior experience in a psychiatric healthcare, acute care, long‑term, or correctional setting is preferred.
- Training or experience in Police Science, Security, Law Enforcement, or Corrections is an advantage.
- Veteran status and National Service experience encouraged.
- Experience as a Security Officer in a psychiatric healthcare facility.
- Experience in a correctional setting.
- Any prior training in security, law enforcement, or related fields.
- Successful fingerprint‑based criminal history check, drug screen, and reference checks are required.
- Employees may be required to disclose immunization status for infection prevention.
