Job Description:

The Security Services Department is responsible for identifying hazards and risks to the safety and security of patients, visitors and staff at SVMHI, and for operating day-to-day security operations including monitoring entrances, preventing contraband entry and minimizing patient elopement risks. The incumbent also serves as a DI‑201 facility investigator, conducting unbiased investigations of abuse, neglect or exploitation of clients when assigned by the Facility Director.

• Monitor all entrances to the facility and grounds to enforce safety and security policies.
• Maintain a safe and secure environment and minimize patient elopement risks.
• Conduct investigations of abuse, neglect or exploitation as a DI‑201 investigator.
• Work independently using resourcefulness, sound judgment, integrity and tact.
• React appropriately in routine and emergency situations dealing effectively with patients, visitors, staff, law enforcement and the public.
• Read and write detailed reports with correct grammar.
• Perform walking rounds, intervene, restrain or transport physically aggressive or combative patients.
• Work with patients with psychiatric disabilities.
• Complete facility-supplied TOVA (behavior management program) training.
• Safely operate a motor vehicle.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing to explain policies and procedures.
• Render credible testimony in a court of law.

The position requires four 7‑hour shifts per week:
Saturday – Sunday 7:00 p.m. – 2:30 a.m.;
Monday – Tuesday 12:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m., or as scheduled by the security supervisor to meet facility and departmental needs.

• Valid driver’s license without any court‑ordered restrictions, active during employment.
• Valid Virginia security guard license or ability to obtain within six months of employment, active during employment.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently using resourcefulness, sound judgment, integrity and tact.
• Ability to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations.
• Ability to read and write detailed reports.
• Physical ability to make walking rounds and intervene with aggressive or combative patients.
• Experience working with patients with psychiatric disabilities.
• Completion of facility‑sponsored Therapeutic Options (behavior management program) training.
• Safe motor vehicle operation.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Capacity to render credible testimony in court.

• Experience as a security officer in psychiatric healthcare, acute care, long‑term or correctional settings.
• Training or experience in Police Science, Security, Law Enforcement, Corrections or related field.
• Veteran status or National Service experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
