Description

The purpose of this classification is to perform firefighting and rescue operations in a variety of public safety and emergency situations, such as fires, hazardous material spills, vehicle accidents, and related situations.

This posting will remain open on a continuous basis. Applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be contacted as vacancies become available.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions (combination of firefighter and fire medic responsibilities):

  • Respond to alarms and all fire and non-fire emergencies, including structural fires, hazardous material spills, vehicle accidents, and various rescue operations, and emergency medical service calls. Provide basic life support services, using modern principles and various types of EMS equipment, as directed by standard operating procedures.
  • Perform firefighting and rescue tasks; extinguish fires, perform vehicle extrication, rope rescue, search for trapped or injured victims; carry, position, and climb ladders; perform forcible entry at emergency scenes; and operate fire stream nozzles.
  • Perform salvage and overhaul operations at fire scenes; assist with evacuation, crowd control; secure utilities; perform traffic control tasks at accident scenes.
  • Assist with flow testing of fire hydrants and record data on charts.
  • Provide mutual aid to other fire departments; assist police and medical units as needed.
  • Drive, operate, and maintain fire pumpers and aerial apparatus; operate and maintain self‑contained breathing apparatus.
  • Operate a variety of equipment in the performance of duties, such as fire rescue equipment, all fire department vehicles, radio communications equipment, fire extinguishers, hoses and nozzles, ladders, power tools, hand tools, and related equipment.
  • Perform pre‑fire planning and evaluation; maintain familiarity with city maps and charts; clean and maintain equipment before and after fires.
  • Perform child safety seat inspections and installations.
  • Participate in public safety education activities; conduct blood pressure screenings.
  • Assist in fire prevention activities; provide lectures, programs, and classes to civic groups, schools, and businesses; conduct fire safety inspections of businesses.
  • Assist with developing and conducting fire department training exercises.
  • Perform routine maintenance work involved in the upkeep of fire department property, vehicles, and equipment; record and report maintenance activities.
  • Attend training classes in firefighting and related subjects; maintain required training hours; maintain physical fitness.
  • Collect and record information for fire reports; prepare reports and logs; copy, maintain, and transmit records; issue burn permits.
  • Operate a personal computer, audio/visual equipment, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e‑mail, Internet, or other applications.
  • Create and maintain positive public relations with the public; provide information and education regarding fire safety, prevention, and firefighting; conduct station tours, blood pressure checks, install smoke detectors; participate in parades and civic events.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
  • Skill in operating and controlling equipment, machinery, tools, and materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
  • Ability to calculate and/or tabulate data, including subsequent actions related to such operations.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards in specific situations.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
  • Ability to apply principles of rational systems; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet varying objectives.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in critical or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
