Licensed Practical Nurses in a medication role are primarily responsible for completing the admissions process, assisting consumers with personal care, observing consumers’ physical and mental status so that medication side effects are recognized and reported, assisting with competency training for new employees, and demonstrating an ability to recognize and deescalate a crisis state.

EastPointe Hospital is a private, free‑standing psychiatric hospital for adults located in Daphne, Ala. EastPointe’s clinical and medical professionals assess and evaluate adults in psychiatric crisis. Treatment focuses on stabilizing psychiatric symptoms and preventing psychiatric commitment. Adults admitted to EastPointe have exhibited life‑threatening, destructive, or disabling behavior or symptoms. Each patient completes a psychiatric diagnostic evaluation and receives 24‑hour clinical care for an estimated three‑to‑seven‑day stay.

The goal is for each patient to return to home or the least restrictive level of care.

• Complete the admission process for consumers, including medical checklist, physical health, nutritional screening, medication list, medication administration record, vital signs, height and weight, transcribing physician orders, Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS), and admission notes if working on the Intermediate Care unit.
• Observe consumers’ behavior in groups and activities and document observations in consumers’ records.
• Interact with consumers and evaluate needs to ensure proper information is reported from shift to shift and during multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
• Provide nursing care.
• Give direction to behavioral staff and CNAs as needed.
• Assist consumers with personal care areas such as bathing, toileting, hygiene items, medical appointments, chores, recreational activities, and safety issues.
• Prepare and administer medications while observing the Six Rights of medication administration.
• Prepare and administer all wound care/treatments as ordered by the physician.
• Conduct inventory of supplies, equipment, and medication.
• Order and maintain supplies, equipment, and medication according to established guidelines so that needed supply is available for consumer care/treatment.
• Collect specimens from consumers as ordered to aid in treatment provision and in diagnosing disease and medical/physical conditions.
• Provide medication education to the consumer and family, including uses and potential side effects.
• Monitor consumers for potential medication side effects and report findings to the physician.
• Assist in conducting consumer orientation and other classes/groups to promote the consumers’ understanding and coping ability as evidenced by client satisfaction and improvement.
• Observe/examine consumers’ physical and mental status to recognize medication side effects and report to the RN/physician, ensuring treatment needs and continuity of care are met.
• Effectively communicate findings and observations of consumers’ physical and mental state with the physician.
• Provide on‑the‑job competency training to promote new employee learning and performance.
• Demonstrate willingness to work on any unit at the facility as needed and as directed by management.
• Interface with the multidisciplinary team and actively participate in the development of the interdisciplinary treatment plan.
• Contact laboratory, request and monitor results, and report all abnormal findings to the physician.
• Provide emergency care as needed (CPR, Mind Set, PRN medications) and according to AltaPointe Policy and Procedures.
• Demonstrate the ability to recognize a crisis state and deescalate or resolve the situation.
• Participate in meetings and training programs to share information, improve skills, and meet licensure/credential requirements.
