Safety Engineer, Civil Engineering
We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Safety Engineer to join our team in supporting and promoting a strong safety culture on our heavy civil construction projects at our New London, CT location. The Safety Engineer will be responsible for ensuring compliance with OSHA, DOT, local/state regulations, and company safety policies. This role requires a field presence and hands-on involvement with crews to identify risks, conduct inspections, and implement corrective actions to maintain a safe work environment across all project phases.
KeyResponsibilities:
· Implement and monitor site-specific safety plans and company safety programs for heavy civil construction projects.
· Conduct daily site inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments, reporting findings and ensuring corrective actions are taken.
· Lead and document Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task planning, and toolbox talks.
· Ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA, DOT, environmental, and industry-specific safety regulations.
· Investigate incidents, near-misses, and safety violations; prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective actions.
· Coordinate and deliver safety orientation and training for new hires, subcontractors, and site visitors.
· Maintain safety records including SDS, inspection logs, training certifications, and incident reports.
· Collaborate with project teams to plan and execute safe work methods, including excavations, heavy equipment operations, traffic control, confined space, and utility work.
· Support the preparation of site-specific safety documentation, such as Emergency Action Plans and Health & Safety Plans.
· Monitor subcontractor compliance with project safety standards and ensure alignment with general contractor expectations.
· Participate in regulatory inspections and interface with safety consultants, clients, or insurance representatives as needed.
Qualifications:· Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or Engineering (or equivalent work experience)
· 2–5 years of experience in a safety-related role in heavy civil, highway, bridge, or infrastructure construction
· Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926, DOT safety standards, and state-specific regulations
· Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with safety management or construction software is a plus
· Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
· Ability to be effective in a fast-paced, field-based environment
· Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
