Position Summary

The College is seeking part-time tutors who are passionate about supporting the academic success of students enrolled in the Second Chance Pell Program. The Part-Time Tutor provides academic support, assists with coursework, strengthens foundational skills, and fosters academic confidence and persistence. Tutors collaborate with faculty and program staff to promote student success in a structured and supportive learning environment.

In the Academic Center of Excellence (ACE), the Tutor provides tutorial services to students, in small groups at a Connecticut Department of Correction facility as part of the Second Chance Pell program. Incumbents provide this support in a Connecticut Department of Correction facility in which the classes and tutoring sessions are held.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), the Interim Associate Dean of Non-traditional Transition Programs or other administrator, the Tutor is accountable for providing assistance to faculty and students in assigned academic areas through effective performance in these essential functional areas:

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing group tutoring
  • Assisting students in carrying out assignments, including giving supplemental instruction in the academic discipline being applied
  • Observing and providing information to faculty on student performance and on those requiring special faculty instruction

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in the assigned academic field
* or a closely related field with one (1) or more years of related teaching and/or tutoring experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and training which would lead to the competencies required to carry out the position’s essential duties.

  • Current academic disciplines English & Mathematics
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience in tutoring and basic instruction in the assigned academic discipline
  • Knowledge of principles and concepts of the assigned academic discipline
  • Experience supporting students in academic goal setting and career planning
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
Special Requirements

Incumbent must go through a complete Department of Corrections Background check and attend a 3-hour Volunteer, Intern and Professional Partner (VIP) training on safety and security and do a Site Sense orientation for the Department of Correction facility in which they will tutor.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to provide academic support via video conferencing platforms
  • Two (2) years of relevant teaching and/or tutoring experience
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Prior experience using the Tutor Trac platform and Blackboard LMS (not all colleges require this experience)
