Overview

Role and Scope of Position:
As a member of the Integrated Energy Planning Team, the Senior Engineer-Integrated Energy Planning will work on targeted electrification and non-pipeline alternative studies. The Senior Engineer will perform as project leader and/or carries out assignments requiring mastery of subject matter, with extensive experience associated with modeling and planning distribution lines and distribution substation facilities in an electric power system. Exhibits strong technical skills on the design of the electric power system.

Exhibits advance knowledge of utility electric power system data and model maintenance. The Senior Engineer-Integrated Energy Planning will contribute in a significant way to the development of new processes, documentation, and reports, as well as gaining a detailed knowledge of gas planning. Together with the Company’s SMEs for Forecasting and Modeling, the Integrated Planning team will work on developing software capabilities to address the integrated planning challenges, as well as data analytics.

Responsibilities
  • Developed detailed distribution planning studies for the targeted electrification pilots as well as the Non-Pipeline Alternatives (NPA) as well as developing documentation for securing budget authorization for Transmission, Distribution and Gas infrastructure upgrades necessary to facilitate customer electrification in lieu of current gas infrastructure and associated upgrades.
  • Supports the development of an integrated energy planning process and standard.
  • Conducts integrated energy planning and non-pipeline alternative studies and identifies Distribution System problems involving multiple feeders and substations, leads and conducts scenario-based planning studies, evaluates alternatives, and recommends appropriate solutions to ensure a reliable distribution system.
  • Prepare contingency studies for distribution networks including N-1 and N-2 analysis.
  • Propose new distribution substation and associated OH and UG feeders.
  • Partners with other departments (Distribution Engineering, Asset Management, Standards, Transmission/Substation engineering, etc.) to prepare economic analysis for Integrated Energy Planning projects.
  • Closely coordinates with distribution system planning on the medium (2-5 year) and long (5+ year) range distribution plans.
  • Supports the community relations and regulatory affairs teams for clear communications on the Company’s electrification pilots and NPA process.
  • Engages with Energy Efficiency, Modelling, and Advanced Forecasting on customer electrified loads.
  • Collaborate with multiple cross-functional groups in developing multi-year targeted electrification projects.
  • Manages backlog and priorities to ensure an on-time delivery of objectives.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders on timelines and priorities of work.
  • Uses an agile approach to workload management for the associate engineers.
  • Supports any related documentation and/or testimony to support regulatory filings.
  • Presents recommendations and/or results to all levels of management as appropriate.
  • Represents the department and the company on various committees.
Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Working knowledge of electric simulation software models and power distribution systems analysis, including load-flow, transient, and 8760-hours simulation
  • Knowledge of new technologies including but not limited to photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery storage.
  • Knowledge of the techniques for planning the expansion of distribution lines and distribution substation facilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
  • Advanced knowledge of distribution line design and operating practices.
  • Knowledge of National, State and other planning standards.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation.
  • Excellent team skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, ability to develop strategic partnerships.
  • Ability to achieve desired results by setting high standards for self and others, and accepts responsibility for outcomes.
