Counseling/ Social Work Intern

The purpose of this position is to develop and practice assessment, psychotherapy and counseling skills with individuals, couples, families and groups, and to participate as a team member in departmental and Agency meetings and work groups as part of a graduate program. Students will learn and participate in client engagement, treatment, referral and discharge and will be exposed to evidence based practices, data collection and outcomes/research as well.

ESSENTIAL

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides screening, engagement, assessment, crisis intervention, and referral services in response to telephone requests for aid; makes assessment of clients’ mental health and safety; provides information about community resources, refers clients to most appropriate resource.
  • Gathers information through engagement interviews and initial assessments; evaluates nature and degree of mental/emotional distress, substance use/abuse, health issues, and social/interpersonal problems; develops individual service plans with clients.
  • Conducts short and long-term psychotherapy sessions with individuals, couples, families and groups using various psychotherapeutic treatment modalities/evidence-based practices and/or assessment tools. Sessions may be conducted in a variety of settings including both in person and through telehealth. Coordinates treatment with other agencies, services and other programs within the agency.
  • Completes case notes in electronic medical record on intake assessment, treatment plan and client’s progress in accordance to Agency policy and procedure.
  • Participates in clinical supervision and administrative meetings as required by the Clinical Supervisor.
  • Manages assigned caseload and coordinates coverage with Clinical Supervisor for planned absences. Follows agency policy and procedure for requesting leave. Commits to a consistent schedule for the duration of the placement and through the designated end date of each quarter or semester.
  • Reacts to change and stress productively and handles other tasks as assigned.
  • Gets along with others and works as a team.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

In order to perform the essential functions of this job, after an orientation period, the employee must possess the following: a working knowledge of Riveon Mental Health and Recovery Policy and Procedures, including sensitivity and adherence to clients’ rights, DEI, confidentiality, and health and safety issues. Must exhibit sensitivity to race, cultures, gender and sexual identity and other DEI issues.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A majority of time will be spent in an office environment. The individual must be able to speak and communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Due to the amount of documentation that is required, the individual must have excellent writing skills. The intern may be required to sit for extended periods and will spend a portion of their time on the telephone.

Must be able to bend, stoop, walk, and lift and push minimal loads at various times. A considerable amount of time may also be spent working on a computer so the intern should have close vision ability. In addition, the individual must be able to operate basic office equipment.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

Interns must be currently pursuing a Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Marriage & Family Therapy. Prior to beginning internship, the candidate must obtain license in the State of Ohio as a Social Work Trainee (SWT), Counseling Trainee (CT), or Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee (MFTT). If seeking a Practicum placement, must be willing to commit to remaining at Riveon Mental Health and Recovery through the duration of their internship (the full school year).

Prior experience in assessment, crisis intervention, conducting long and short-term therapy and counseling or other experience in the treatment of mental health/addictions are preferred. Must have strong oral and written skills. Basic computer skills required, including familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office.
