Position: Special Education Teacher (ASD Program)

Special Education Teacher (ASD Program)

SMEC is seeking a strong and diverse pool of applicants for the position of Special Education Teacher (ASD Program). Experience teaching students with ASD, as well as MA DESE license in Moderate Special Needs required. Training in ABA or other positive behavioral support methodologies strongly preferred.

The Teacher manages the classroom on a day-to-day basis by planning and providing instruction based on the MA Curriculum Frameworks, demonstrating effective classroom management, developing and implementing measurable Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals, providing assessment and curriculum design as well as supervision of students, classroom staff and ongoing parent contact.

This is a School Year Position (184 days) plus a 5 week part-time summer program. Valid licensure as a special education teacher (with Moderate or Severe designation) or waiver eligible from the MA Department of Education required. Benefits Eligible (Health, Dental, Life Insurances, 457b/403b). This position qualifies for the Massachusetts Teachers' Retirement System (MTRS). Local travel between programs is required to support students at different school buildings.

Essential Duties:

  • Able to develop and implement appropriate data driven, culturally responsive instruction, individual education plans and behavior intervention plans.
  • Able to administer formal and informal assessments and analyze results in order to create diverse and interesting lessons, goals, and activities.
  • Administers all state mandated testing and attends required annual training in this area.
  • Responsible for supervision of all classroom staff including assisting with interpersonal issues should they arise, completing annual evaluations, and reviewing/approving bi-weekly payroll for classroom staff.
  • Develops and maintains a culturally diverse, purposeful, respectful, and stimulating classroom environment that is organized and positive in nature and geared towards student interests.
  • Develops, communicates, and implements purposeful schedules for staff.
  • Develops awareness of inclusion procedures within the host school and maintains positive relationships and ongoing communication with the administrators and receiving teachers within host school.
  • Prepares for, attends, and fully participates in student and staff meetings and assists in the orderly and efficient running of such meetings, as well as attends parent conferences as scheduled by host district.
  • Demonstrates ongoing professional growth and skills consistent with current research and practice in education through in-services, coursework, evaluations, and online courses.
  • Accurately completes documentation related to student incidents/injuries, physical intervention, and 51A reports and/or DPPC.
  • Completes all expected paperwork in a high quality manner within mandated/required timelines.
  • Shows respect and compassion for all members of the classroom and school environment including students, families, staff, and other community members.
  • Implements all aspects of the educational day, which may include activities of daily living (ADL’s) such as toileting, feeding, transferring, self-care, and assistance with mobility including lifting.
  • Effectively utilizes any recommended adaptive equipment for individual students.
  • Participates in all required Collaborative in-services as well as those recommended by supervisors.
  • Communicates all significant occurrences to the appropriate supervisor in a respectful and timely manner.
  • Shares in the overall everyday activities necessary for operation of the program (inventorying, ordering, tracking as necessary, suggestions for program improvement, etc.).
  • Maintains an open, honest, and respectful relationship with parents and others involved with the student’s success.
  • Maintains professional boundaries with parents and students.
  • Physical ability to perform physical restraints/escorts as needed.
  • Expected to read and adhere to all Employee Handbook policies.

Job Requirements:

  • CORI and SAFIS are required for all positions.
  • Master degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
