Job Summary
The Dredge Operator operates the dredge in a safe and efficient manner and uses acquired skills to dredge sand from pond-filled pits. This job interfaces, on a daily basis, with the rest of the operations in this location. The employee holding this job must perform the work activities in a correct, accurate and timely manner.
Job Responsibilities- Become familiar with assigned equipment and identify potential maintenance problems by sight and sound, informing supervisory personnel.
- Carry out minor repairs and adjustments.
- Assist maintenance personnel with repairs and preventive maintenance.
- Ensure dredge has an adequate supply of tools, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies and safety equipment.
- Correctly change or repair various teeth from cutter heads.
- Follow correct moving procedures when moving dredge to mining.
- Provide necessary lubrication of moving parts on dredge.
- Operate a workboat with motor safely and efficiently.
- Operate under training from lead man, loader operator, and supervisor for smooth and safe production.
- Operate controls and levers to hoist, drag and swing cutter head for efficient productivity from banks of the pond.
- Perform welding when required to combat breakdowns.
- Work under direction of Leadman and Manager.
- Maintain good housekeeping of the equipment.
- Replace or assist other workers as needed or directed.
- Adhere to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times.
- Wear proper safety equipment while on plant grounds.
- Meet or exceed company safety standards.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by management.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience with similar or same equipment or machinery.
- Bilingual (a plus).
- Prior experience with similar or same equipment or machinery.
- Ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions and solve problems from standardized situations and work experience.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Capable of working in all weather conditions.
- Perform basic logging and documenting functions.
- Read English sufficiently and comprehend information in manuals, regulations and reports.
- Communicate via two‑way radio in English.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to detect potential breakdowns of equipment.
- Detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly.
- Obey company working practices and Federal Safety Regulations.
- Communicate well with supervisors, welders, leadmen, mechanics, maintenance personnel, co‑workers and outside contractors.
- High level of attentiveness and physical coordination to perform work activities safely and productively.
- Ability to work night shift (12 hours per day, 4 nights per week, 5 pm–5 am).
- Capable of working extended hours as needed.
- Continuous exposure to extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme noise, and working outdoors.
- Must wear protective equipment while at the location.
- Perform job functions which include walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, turning, climbing to a significant degree, and/or rowing controls.
- Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. - Require regular talking and hearing to communicate safely.
- Must pass DOT physical including back X‑ray, hearing test, and drug/alcohol screen.
