Position: SPECIAL EDUCATION PARA EDUCATOR - 7 HRS

Special Education Para Educator – 7 Hours

Position:
Special Education Para Educator at Hayes Elementary, Davenport, Iowa.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide research based social skills instruction and intervention under supervision of a certified teacher.
  • Attend additional required evening trainings or meetings during the school year or during the summer.
  • Accept feedback from specialists and special education facilitators regarding implementation and use feedback to implement changes in instruction.
  • Follow directives of classroom teacher, building administration, and district administration.
  • Work with students who are explosive in nature and engage in physical and verbal aggression toward others.
  • Work with students with learning, behavior, physical, and/or cognitive disabilities, mild, moderate, and/or severe; including students diagnosed with Autism and Spectrum Disorder.
  • Provide services for special education students as needed in the special or general education setting.
  • Under direction of the special education teacher, provide academic assistance, behavior interventions, and instruction of social skills and daily living skills.
  • Attend field trips with students as necessary.
  • Maintain regular attendance to meet IEP services and ensure provision of FAPE.
  • Analyze given situations and respond appropriately.
  • Interact appropriately with all students.
  • Assume teamwork responsibilities in classroom, cafeteria, hallway, etc.
  • Have good people skills to work with students and others in the building.
  • Accompany students to and from the bus.
  • Supervise students during classroom, lunch, breakfast, and other school activities.
  • Work individually with one student or a small group as assigned.
  • Assist students in restroom, changing clothes, and hygiene needs.
  • Assist students in physical education and community sites.
  • Follow multiple behavior plans simultaneously and implement changes when directed.
  • Recognize the need for and initiate activities with students.
  • Be flexible with assignments, changing duties when needed per building principal, teacher, or facilitator.
  • Climb stairs, walk long distances, navigate city bus system (with training).
  • Implement accurate data collection, graphing, and necessary paperwork properly.
  • Remain calm and respectful when students are in crisis.
  • Engage in collaborative work and contribute to team planning.
  • Perform duties such as lifting, toileting, diapering, hygiene care, and supervise students in the restroom.
  • Participate in and direct extensive physical activities; supervise out-of-classroom activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Follow any duties assigned by administration.
Physical Requirements of Position

Regularly sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk. Occasionally lift, move, or push items up to 50 lbs. Supervise students in all weather conditions. Implement Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including physical restraint and escorting.

Work Environment

Noise ranges from quiet to loud. Work may be indoors or outdoors, in non–air‑conditioned rooms. The environment is tobacco‑free and alcohol‑free. Fast‑paced with constant contact with students, staff, and the public. Responsible for safety, well‑being, and work output of students.

Special Qualifications Desired
  • Ability to work with students with significant academic, behavioral, and social skills difficulties.
  • Genuine care and concern for all students and a willingness to help them succeed.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directives of certified staff.
