SPECIAL EDUCATION PARA EDUCATOR - 7 HRS (2 OPENINGS)

Wages

Salary: $18.93 per hour. New hires: entry level rate $14.93 per hour. Current employees in the bargaining unit refer to the applicable salary schedule. This position includes the $4.00 special education differential as outlined in the memorandum of agreement between DCSD and the Davenport Association of Para Educators.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide research‑based social skills instruction and intervention under supervision of a certified teacher.
  • Attend any additional required evening trainings or meetings during the school year or summer.
  • Accept feedback from specialists and the special education facilitator regarding implementation and use feedback to adjust instruction.
  • Follow directives of the classroom teacher, building administration, and district administration.
  • Work with students who are explosive or engage in physical and verbal aggression toward others.
  • Work with students who have learning, behavior, physical, and/or cognitive disabilities, including those diagnosed with Autism or Spectrum Disorder.
  • Provide services for special education students as needed in special or general education settings.
  • Under direction of a special education teacher, provide academic assistance, behavior interventions, and instruction of social and daily living skills.
  • Attend field trips with students as necessary.
  • Maintain regular attendance to meet services in the IEP and ensure the provision of FAPE.
  • Analyze situations and respond appropriately.
  • Interact appropriately with all students and provide assistance across the classroom, cafeteria, hallway, and other areas.
  • Work as a team player to assist in all classroom and school activities.
  • Demonstrate strong people skills when working with students, classmates, and school staff.
  • Accompany students to and from the bus, restroom, and physical education sessions.
  • Supervise students in the classroom, during meals, on field trips, and at work sites.
  • Work individually with one student or a small group as assigned.
  • Assist students with changing clothes, hygiene needs, and restroom use.
  • Manage the environment and protect students during the school day.
  • Follow multiple behavior plans simultaneously and implement directed changes.
  • Recognize the need for and initiate activities with students.
  • Remain flexible with assignments and duties as directed by the principal, teacher, or facilitator.
  • Exercise patience, dependability, and acceptance of responsibility with students.
  • Climb stairs, walk long distances, and navigate the City Bus System.
  • Follow specific procedures for teaching new skills as directed.
  • Accompany students to community and building work sites and provide instruction, supervision, and behavior modification independently.
  • Collect accurate data and produce graphs as guided.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Maintain flexible day‑to‑day scheduling.
  • Build rapport with culturally diverse students to help each reach their full potential.
  • Support the school’s multi‑tiered system of supports (MTSS) for behavior and academics.
  • Complete a Medicaid Fraud background check prior to hire.
  • Physically restrain students if trained and as directed by the principal.
  • Respond calmly and respectfully during student crises.
  • Collaborate with the team and contribute to planning.
  • Perform toileting, diapering, hygiene care, and restroom supervision as needed.
  • Stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Ride the bus with students as required.
  • Participate in and direct extensive physical activities.
  • Supervise students during out‑of‑classroom activities.
  • Model a positive attitude and team cooperation.
  • Accept direction from special education teachers.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration.
Physical Requirements

Employee must regularly sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk. Must occasionally lift, move, or push items up to 50 lb. Must supervise students in all weather conditions, manage multiple demands, and interact with the public and staff. Must implement crisis prevention interventions, including physical restraining procedures and escorting.

Work Environment

Noise levels may range from quiet to loud. Work can be indoors or outdoors, including non‑air‑conditioned spaces. The environment is tobacco‑free and alcohol‑free, fast‑paced, and involves constant contact with students, staff, or the public. The employee is directly responsible for the safety and well‑being of students.
