Special Education Teacher

Duties include attending all required trainings, using data to drive instruction, collaborating with general education teachers, implementing services outlined in each individual's IEP, establishing clear objectives for lessons, identifying students' needs, communicating with parents, planning and scheduling lessons, resolving student behavioral and academic problems, engaging in collaborative work, participating in co-teaching, supporting instruction through an Individual Education Plan, providing individual and small group research-based instruction, developing and using instructional materials, instructing students in citizenship and basic subject matter, developing lesson plans and instructional materials, planning and conducting activities for a balanced program of instruction, preparing for assigned classes, developing individualized educational plans, fostering cooperative social behavior, developing in each student an awareness of his/her worth, utilizing technology in the delivery of instruction, utilizing research-based teaching strategies, evaluating students' academic and social growth, maintaining accurate and complete student records, establishing, implementing, and enforcing rules and procedures for appropriate classroom behavior, modeling and maintaining standards of responsible student behavior, implementing effective individualized behavior management strategies and curriculum accommodations, demonstrating substantial ability in interpreting behavior assessments, Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention plans and data, attending professional in-service activities and teacher training workshops, communicating, collaborating, and cooperating with parents, colleagues, supervisors, and students, planning and coordinating the work of educational assistants and other professional support staff, supervising students in out of classroom activities, participating in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities, supervising students and/or educational assistants, knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, participating as a collaborative teacher team member, ability to assess the strengths, needs, interests, and aspirations of their students, ability to set achievable instructional goals, ability to be resourceful in responding to the changing needs of their students and their community, ability to use a variety of media and technology to enhance their communications, willingness to support and implement Davenport's multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) for both behavior and academics, other duties as assigned.

Physical requirements include sitting, standing, speaking, hearing, seeing, and walking to carry out routine duties, occasionally lifting, moving, or pushing items of 50 lbs, supervising students in all types of weather, meeting multiple demands from several people and interacting with the public and other staff, implementing Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including appropriate physical restraint procedures and escorting. Work environment includes noise level from quiet to loud, work may be indoors and/or outdoors, work may be in non-air-conditioned rooms, substance-free environment, fast-paced atmosphere with constant contact with students, staff, or the public, direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, and work output of student.

Special qualification desired includes B.A. or B.S. degree in Education, cross-cultural experience preferred, special education teaching experience desired, willingness to accept supervisory duties that are conducive to a positive building environment, understanding of the need for confidentiality with respect to student and parental rights and for conversations and hard copy information, experience with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) or willingness to be trained, strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students to ensure each child reaches his/her full potential.
