Job Description

An Interventional Radiology (IR) Technologist assists with minimally invasive procedures that utilize imaging techniques such as fluoroscopy, CT scans, and ultrasound to guide physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. IR Technologists work closely with interventional radiologists and other medical professionals to perform procedures that can treat diseases, blockages, and injuries without the need for traditional surgery. Responsibilities include preparing patients, operating imaging equipment, and ensuring a sterile and safe environment during procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-Procedure Preparation
    • Prepare the IR suite by ensuring all necessary imaging equipment, sterile instruments, and supplies are available and functioning.
    • Review patient information, medical history, and previous imaging studies.
    • Verify patient identity, allergies, and consent forms before the procedure begins.
    • Explain the procedure to the patient, address concerns, and provide reassurance.
  • Assisting During Procedures
    • Assist the interventional radiologist with angiograms, biopsies, catheter placements, stent insertions, and drain placements.
    • Operate imaging equipment (fluoroscopy, CT, or ultrasound) to guide the physician.
    • Maintain a sterile environment during procedures.
    • Administer contrast agents or dyes as directed.
    • Monitor the patient’s vital signs and report changes.
  • Patient Safety and Comfort
    • Ensure patient comfort and safety during the procedure.
    • Minimize radiation exposure by following safety protocols and using shielding.
    • Monitor for complications such as bleeding, infection, or adverse reactions.
  • Post-Procedure Care
    • Monitor patients for immediate complications.
    • Assist in transferring patients to recovery.
    • Provide post‑procedure care instructions.
    • Assist in removal of catheter lines, drains, or other devices if required.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting
    • Inspect and maintain IR equipment.
    • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions during procedures.
    • Keep accurate records of equipment use and maintenance.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team
    • Work closely with radiologists, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals.
    • Provide feedback on imaging quality and patient positioning.
    • Participate in pre‑ and post‑procedure discussions.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping
    • Accurately document all patient information, procedures, imaging parameters, and medications in the EHR.
    • Ensure records comply with hospital or clinic policies.
    • Maintain detailed logs of imaging procedures and contrast agents.
  • Radiation Safety and Compliance
    • Follow radiation safety protocols and wear protective equipment.
    • Adhere to HIPAA, infection control measures, and accreditation guidelines.
    • Stay updated on radiation safety practices and procedural advancements.
  • Professional Development and Training
    • Participate in continuing education and training in interventional radiology.
    • Obtain and maintain certifications in radiologic technology and interventional radiology.
    • Mentor and assist in training new IR technologists or students.
