Job Description Health Para – 7 Hrs/Day – Jefferson Elementary – Davenport, Iowa

INTERNAL BIDDERS: OPEN 06/08/2026 thru 06/12/2026 @ 4pm.
EXTERNAL APPLICANTS (if no internal bidders): Open Until Filled.
WAGES: $18.09/hr current employees with seniority in the bargaining unit: refer to the Salary Schedule established by the applicable bargaining Unit.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Complete an internal bid as you normally would, via the district homepage.
- Submit Letter of Intent for the position to Gina Ekstrom, District Nurse by 06/12/2026, 4PM.
- Submit two (2) letters of reference: one (1) from a supervisor and one (1) from a colleague to Gina Ekstrom, District Nurse by 06/12/2026, 4PM.
- Internal candidates will be interviewed by a panel consisting of at least four (4) individuals including the Principal, Head Nurse, Building Nurse and one Para educator selected by the para union.
All employees working with/for the Special Education students will be required to pass the Medicaid Fraud background check prior to hire and/or transferring to a special education position. The check is run several times a year. If at any time your name appears on the Medicaid Fraud listing, you will be notified and may be removed from your current position.
Duties & Responsibilities (continued):
- Assist students with personal hygiene, nutrition, comfort and safety issues.
- Provide general/emergent care to students as directed by the Registered Nurse and building administration.
- Prepare and administer medication as directed by the student's physician.
- Monitor students for allergic reactions and follow individual health care plans or district procedures. Respond to health-related phone calls and parent questions.
- Monitor and check for head lice when required. Prepare and monitor health records.
- Maintain daily nursing office visits in Infinite Campus. Maintain regular communication with the building nurse. Correspond with parents when appropriate.
- Complete staff/student injury forms as needed.
- Perform other services or clerical duties as assigned by the Registered Nurse or school administrator(s). Maintain daily medication administration in Infinite Campus.
- Must be willing to attend training courses and complete training to assume the duties and responsibilities of the position yearly.
- Additional duties may include catheterization, tube feeding, use of electronic blood pressure equipment, pulse oximeter, peak flow meter and provide care to students needing medications such as dis, intranasal versed, glucagon, insulin and epi-pen.
- Must hold the Infant/Child/Adult CPR certificate prior to start date and remain current.
- Must hold a Mandatory Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Reporter Certificate prior to start date and remain current.
- Must complete Universal Precaution and Exposure Training prior to start date and remain current.
- Must be willing to complete the training and obtain the Medication Administration Certificate and remain current.
- Must be willing to work with a diverse population and treat all with dignity and respect. Recognition of confidentiality with respect to children's and parents' right to privacy.
- Successful candidate must possess strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students to ensure each child reaches his/her full potential.
- Must be willing to support and implement Davenport's multi-tiered system of support (MTSS).
- Good attendance and punctuality are a must to ensure that the duties and responsibilities of the job are performed successfully.
Physical Requirements of Position:
- Ability to lift, pull, push 50 lbs.
- Ability to physically sit, stoop, bend, reach, and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to see and feel for the purpose of adequate student review.
- Must be able to ambulate stairs.
Special Qualifications Desired:
- Must possess a valid driver's license and a reliable car.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the nurse and staff.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Patient, compassionate and sensitive to individuals willing to work with a diverse population.
