Extension Agent, Ag - Livestock and Forages; Assistant, Associate or Agent

Position Overview

Extension Agent, Ag – Livestock and Forages (Assistant, Associate or Full Agent). The role provides leadership for developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in livestock production, forage production, pasture management, animal nutrition, and animal waste management systems for Davidson County. Beef cattle will be the primary species focus and the agent will coordinate with the Davidson County Cattlemen’s Association, 4‑H program, and county partners.

The position may be hired at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Agent level if the candidate meets required qualifications. Responsibilities include leadership of livestock education programs, supporting 4‑H youth livestock education, supervising County fair livestock shows, and serving as an advisor to the Voluntary Agriculture District board.

• Develop, maintain, and evaluate programs that follow NC Cooperative Extension, county, and national laws, policies, and guidelines, including the Voluntary Agricultural District program.
• Assess client needs and impact by evaluating agriculture programs and services on a regular basis.
• Collaborate with Extension programs, staff, agencies, and community organizations to meet the needs of the agriculture community.
• Network with agents, specialists, and local producers to plan and implement innovative field days and educational programs.
• Promote agriculture within Davidson County.
• Engage cattle producers, small ruminant producers, Equine and other animal industry stakeholders, and beginning farmers through community events and 4‑H programs.
• Assist 4‑H and youth livestock programs and partner with county departments (Emergency Services, Animal Control, Soil & Water, NRCS, FSA) to provide resources and guidance on business planning.
• Coordinate pesticide training opportunities with the county pesticide coordinator.
• Develop and market educational programs with measurable impacts and collaborate with other agencies and organizations to reach intended audiences.

• Required:
  
  Bachelor’s degree in animal science, crop science, agronomy, or a related agricultural field.
• Experience working with a wide variety of livestock.
• Travel within the county and occasional travel outside the county/district.
• High level of computer competency.
• Preferred:
  Master’s degree in an agricultural or related field.
• Preferred:
  Extension or other professional experience.

• Excellence in oral and written communication.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
• Ability to plan and manage programs independently.
