Assistant Professor of Chemistry (Analytical Chemistry)

The Department of Chemistry at Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Analytical Chemistry beginning July 1, 2027. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field before the start of the appointment. Davidson College is committed to access and opportunity for students from all backgrounds and perspectives, and current members of the department actively participate in initiatives that enrich the teaching and mentoring of our students.

The person hired into this position will demonstrate expertise in the development and application of novel analytical methods, particularly within mass spectrometry. Teaching introductory analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis (CHE 220, 320), introductory general chemistry (CHE 115), and advanced electives commensurate with the candidate's training and expertise are in the purview of this position. Contributions to first-year writing courses or lab sciences for students not pursuing STEM are valued.

To support a successful research program involving undergraduates, the position includes start-up funds and a personal research lab in a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary science building.

Candidates will be evaluated based on the following application materials (pages are suggested length): a cover letter describing the applicant's interest and qualifications for the position (1-2 pages), a CV (2-5 pages), a teaching statement listing and describing courses/subdisciplines of interest and how the applicant would create a classroom environment that promotes critical thinking and engages all students (2-3 pages), a research statement describing the applicant's proposed research directions if hired into the position including how they would welcome and mentor undergraduates from a variety of backgrounds (3-5 pages), one publication or manuscript representative of the applicant's graduate or postgraduate work, and unofficial undergraduate and graduate academic transcripts.

Include in the CV names and contact information for three people from whom letters of recommendation may be solicited by early October. See here for additional information about the area, college, department, position, search process, and specific guidance for materials requested. Preference will be given to applications received by September 18, 2026; the position will remain open until filled. Inquiries may be directed to Mitch Anstey, Chemistry Department Search Committee Chair, mianstey.
