Overview

The Thermal Systems Lead Engineer – Sustainable Design will serve as a dedicated resource for embedding sustainability into every aspect of our data center systems. This role leads the development of sustainability standards for reference designs and creates methodologies to quantify their benefits, championing our corporate sustainability purpose through energy and water efficiency, decarbonization, and life‑cycle impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with engineering leads across the mechanical, electrical/power, and operations loops to ensure multi‑generational system roadmaps reflect and deliver sustainable data center designs.
  • Act as an internal expert on sustainable data center designs, maintaining a strong understanding of current and future technologies to drive sustainability.
  • Develop sustainability standards for all system reference designs, including metrics for PUE, WUE, carbon footprint, and sound levels (dB).
  • Lead efforts for quantifying benefits around sustainable data centers and Trane Technologies system architecture reference designs.
  • Develop and manage system‑level Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in partnership with the enterprise sustainable team.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to drive a roadmap for improving sustainability performance of our solutions.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and technical guidance to junior engineers and cross‑functional team members, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing.
  • Engage with regulatory bodies and industry forums to represent Trane Technologies’ voice on data center sustainability.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 7–10 years of engineering experience with a strong focus on sustainable designs in mission‑critical facilities and data centers.
  • Experience in sustainable building design, energy modeling, or life‑cycle assessment.
  • Deep knowledge of data center sustainability metrics (PUE, WUE, CUE).
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and green building certifications.
  • Passion for driving sustainability and a proven ability to influence cross‑functional teams.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams and external partners.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment serving mission‑critical customers.
Preferred Technical Skills
  • Experience with PLC controls, onsite power generation, or backup power distribution.
  • Knowledge of HVAC products, components, and systems.
  • Strong thermal/fluid energy and/or controls background.
  • Technical creativity balanced with real‑world feasibility.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Strong customer‑facing and professional society presentation skills.
Compensation & Benefits

Annual base salary range: $95,700.00 – $. The role is eligible for incentive compensation and does not include sales commission.

Benefits include health insurance, retirement plan with up to 8% company contribution (401(k) match plus core contribution), paid time off (15 vacation days, 9 holidays, 3 floating holidays, sick leave), and tuition assistance.
