UC Cooperative Extension Orchard Systems Advisor (Cherries, Walnuts, Olives, Apples)
Location:
San Joaquin County; headquarters in Stockton, CA. Serves San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties.
- Develop and implement applied research and extension education programs focused on walnut and sweet cherry production.
- Conduct research on production systems, integrated pest management, nutrient and irrigation management, business strategies, soil fertility, and climate change mitigation.
- Provide education and outreach through individual consultations, workshops, field demonstrations, webinars, and published materials.
- Develop regional and statewide expertise in cherries, walnuts, olives, apples, prunes, persimmons, and pomegranates.
- Collaborate with UC faculty, county directors, USDA‑ARS, CDFA, NRCS, and industry partners on research and extension initiatives.
- Lead program management and mentoring of students and personnel.
- Master’s degree in pomology, production horticulture, pest management, or a closely related field.
- Experience conducting applied research in agriculture or natural resources.
- Experience delivering educational and outreach programming.
- Experience in program and/or personnel management.
- Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License (QAL) or ability to obtain prior to supervision.
- Valid California Driver’s License and proof of liability and vehicle insurance for travel.
- Authorized to work in the U.S.; sponsorship not offered.
- Strong engagement with partner organizations and growers.
- Effective communication with regional audiences, elected officials, and agencies.
- Experience managing applied research or evaluation projects and setting measurable goals.
- Ability to work with diverse clientele across socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
Salary range: $85,600 – $108,600 (Assistant Rank, Step I–VI). Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, two days per month paid vacation, one day per month paid sick leave, holidays, and sabbatical privileges.
