Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Law Faculty: Professors or Teaching Track (Entry/Lateral)

The University of California, Davis School of Law invites applications for two faculty positions (entry‑level or lateral) beginning July 1, 2027 in either the Professor series or the Professor of Teaching series. We welcome strong applicants in all areas and have a particular need for applicants with interest or expertise in teaching first‑year law courses, Professional Responsibility, or Evidence.

For the Professor series, we seek applicants with an established record demonstrating (or clear promise of, for entry‑level tenure‑track applicants) scholarly distinction in academic research, as well as a commitment to excellence in teaching, and maintenance of a strong academic community. Application for the Acting Professor/Professor of Law title requires a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research agenda, teaching evaluations (if applicable), a writing sample, and contact information for three (3) references.

For the Professor of Teaching series, applicants will be evaluated primarily on an established record demonstrating (or clear promise of, for entry‑level applicants) excellence in teaching, instructional innovation, curriculum development, student mentoring, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment. The committee will also consider evidence of professional or scholarly achievement related to pedagogy or the legal discipline, as well as meaningful university, professional, and public service.

Application for the Professor of Teaching position requires a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of interest (teaching or pedagogy), teaching evaluations (if applicable), a writing sample, and contact information for three (3) references.

Applicants applying to one series should submit a research agenda or statement of interest (teaching or pedagogy), as applicable, of no more than 1,200 words describing their qualifications, experience, and interest in that series.

Applicants wishing to be considered for both series should submit a single joint research agenda/statement of interest (teaching or pedagogy) that clearly identifies how the applicant's qualifications, experience and interests relate to each position. The statement should not exceed 2,400 words; however, 2,000 words or less is preferred.

Applicants should indicate in their cover letter whether they are applying as an entry‑level or lateral applicant and the series for which they wish to be considered, though the committee on its own accord may choose to consider an applicant for either series.

Applicants must hold a J.D. or equivalent degree by the date of their application. All applicants must apply through the UC Recruit system at the following link: UC Recruit #JPF
07735.

For full consideration, applicants must apply by September 1, 2026, although we recommend submitting application materials as soon as possible because applications may be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Please direct questions to Professor Gabriel “Jack” Chin, Chair of the Faculty Appointments Committee, via email at facultyappointmentsavis.edu. UC Davis supports family‑friendly recruitments. UC Davis covers travel expenses for a second person to accompany an invited faculty recruitment applicant who is a mother (or single parent of either gender) of a breast or bottle‑feeding child less than two years of age.

UC Davis also sponsors a Work Life Program that provides programs and services that support faculty as they strive to honor commitments to work, home, and community.
