Position description

We are seeking an outstanding anatomist for the position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Teaching in Anatomical Sciences to join our faculty in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Cell Biology in the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). Professor of Teaching in Anatomical Science faculty are Academic Senate faculty members whose expertise and responsibilities center on instruction in veterinary anatomy, and scholarly activities in anatomical science and/or pedagogy.

A DVM (or equivalent veterinary degree), M.D. or Ph.D. with advanced knowledge and demonstrated aptitude/experience in gross anatomy instruction required. An individual with experience teaching human anatomy would be considered if there is strong evidence that such skills could be transferred to the instruction of clinical veterinary anatomy. A documented scholarly record or potential to develop innovative scholarly activities in anatomy and/or pedagogy is required.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching is required for appointment at the Associate or Professor rank. The individual must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial atmosphere. Preferred qualifications include documented success in the following areas: teaching large classes of 150 or more students, use of evidence-based teaching practices, development/use of modern anatomical instructional technologies, the ability to identify and develop effective teaching strategies, and demonstrated work advancing the pedagogy of anatomy.

Qualifications:

Minimum: (required at time of application)

Candidates must possess a DVM (or equivalent veterinary degree), M.D. or Ph.D. with advanced knowledge and demonstrated aptitude/experience in gross anatomy instruction.

A documented scholarly record or potential to develop innovative scholarly activities in anatomy and/or pedagogy is required.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching is required for appointment at the Associate or Professor ranks.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse community.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position):

A veterinary medical degree (DVM or equivalent)

Documented success in the following areas: teaching large classes of 150 or more students, use of evidence-based teaching practices, development/use of modern anatomical instructional technologies, the ability to identify and develop effective teaching strategies, and demonstrated work advancing the pedagogy of anatomy.

Responsibilities:

Teaching:

Responsibilities include:

1) Leading and coordinating instruction of professional students in veterinary anatomy at the gross and topographic levels with a focus on clinical practice;
2) participation in all types of teaching sessions including laboratories, lectures and discussions in the DVM curriculum with a goal of vertical integration within the veterinary professional curriculum;
3) development of course materials and teaching tools for the instruction of anatomy;
4) preparation of examination materials;
5) instruction and supervision of anatomy technical staff in material preparation and course organization; and
6) participation in continuing professional education.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a reputation for veterinary anatomy teaching excellence locally, regionally and nationally through development of innovative anatomy teaching and learning tools and methods. This position requires the development, production and maintenance of veterinary anatomy teaching materials which integrate anatomical instruction with state-of-the-art technologies. This individual is expected to promote the integration of advanced teaching tools with anatomical instruction throughout the veterinary professional curriculum and to promote collaboration with faculty and extensive resources available within the SVM.

Other responsibilities could include providing anatomy support for collaborative scholarship with faculty, residents and students within the School of Veterinary Medicine, graduate and undergraduate programs.

Professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity:
