Position Overview:

The salary range for this position is $106,800 – $130,700 (annual). “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

The Department of Human Ecology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the field of Aging and Adult Development with a focus on teaching undergraduate courses for the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program that cover ways to promote health and wellbeing from middle to older adulthood for all people, including – but not limited to – across geographies (e.g., rural and urban) and population subgroups, especially those who are economically vulnerable and/or historically marginalized.

This may also be a topic of the position’s scholarly expertise. The appointee is expected to have experience in and/or knowledge of best practices for providing equitable education and fostering learning across students with different backgrounds and learning styles. The appointee would also be expected to promote inclusive excellence in teaching across the department’s faculty by leading workshops on best practices.

This is an academic year (9 month) position with anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. Professors of Teaching are academic senate faculty members whose expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education and scholarly analysis/improvement of teaching methods.

The appointee will be expected to carry out high-level and innovative teaching in the areas above and in alignment with the broad goals of the department. The appointee may be required to teach up to six undergraduate courses per year in departmental undergraduate curricula as assigned by the department chair; assignment quantities are based on enrollment, scope (classroom, field, laboratory) and needs of the unit as well as career stage of the appointee.

Example courses include: HDE 117 (Longevity), HDE 160 (Social Aspects of Aging), HDE 161 (Technology Use, Health, and Aging), HDE 163 (Cognitive Neuropsychology in Adulthood and Aging), HDE 100C (Adulthood and Aging core course), HDE 143 (Field Studies of the Elderly), and depending on expertise, HDE 132 (Individual Differences in Cognition), HDE 134 (Disparities in Health), HDE 135 (Health Behaviors across the Lifespan), and HDE 137 (Contextual Determinants of Health).

New course development based on expertise and availability in the departmental teaching schedule may also be considered. In addition, the appointee will be expected to contribute to the department through student advising, curricular development, and committee participation.

The appointee will have a leadership role in the scholarship of teaching and learning, working with faculty in the Human Ecology department to develop, implement and assess new pedagogical initiatives, and develop a successful discipline-based pedagogical research program in human sciences, with a primary focus on teaching aging and adult development. The appointee will also be expected to demonstrate continued professional growth and contribute to the university mission through service activities.
