Environmental Health Safety Specialist

UC Davis Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is committed to providing a safe environment for Campus students, employees, faculty, and visitors. Under the general direction of the EH&S Environmental Services Manager, this position manages the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) compliance program and supports the hazardous materials and hazardous waste programs. Serves as a subject matter expert in the CUPA and asbestos/lead program.

The Specialist will participate in the department daily and after-hours "on-call" team to provide technical information and response to the campus community.

• Current 40-hour HAZWOPER Training Certificate.
• Valid CA commercial driver's license with Haz Mat endorsement or able to obtain commercial license with Haz Mat endorsement within 6 months.
• Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental health, occupational health, environmental toxicology, biological sciences, public health, or similar discipline. Different academic backgrounds with relevant work experience will also be considered.
• Experience conducting and coordinating audits, investigations, evaluations, and achieving necessary corrective action in a timely manner.

• Experience in forklift operation, ability to drive a manual transmission truck, and to use a drum dolly and a variety of pumps for transferring liquids.
• Demonstrate technical writing skills to develop detailed compliance reports, environmental assessment reports, and correspondence.
• Skill to interpret new regulations and determine their applicability to campus operations, and devise strategies and procedures for compliance. Communication (oral, written, presentation, documentation) and interpersonal skills, interact with customers, convey technical information in lay terms, interpret and advise on regulations and laws, conduct training and educational programs, and develop detailed compliance reports and correspondence.

• Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) credential or have the experience and education to obtain the CHMM within 6 months.
• Two to five years of relevant industrial hygiene experience with a focus on the following topics:
  Asbestos and lead industry (assessments, sampling, oversight, abatement, reporting, etc.), hazard assessments, and exposure sampling.
• Skills to perform calculations for radioactive decay, package limits, disposal limits, toxicity of mixtures, and drum contents.

The Environmental Health and Safety Office is responsible for encouraging safe and healthy working conditions for all UC Davis staff, faculty, visitors, and students. Within EH&S, the Integrated Hazardous Waste Management Group oversees the management of hazardous waste.
