Clinical Chemistry and Hematology Supervisor; CLIN LAB SUPV

Under direction of the Laboratory Manager, provides day-to-day supervisory and technical support to the Chemistry and Hematology Labs. Perform extensive analysis and technical consultation for Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) integration for clinicians, researchers, and the campus research community. Perform quality assurance and quality control functions for the Chemistry and Hematology Labs. Acts as the liaison between supervisors and quality assurance program(s).

Establish and oversee routine quality assurance programs. Work with Laboratory Manager to establish, implement, and maintain a quality system agency. Assist in establishing and validating new tests as required, including generation of reference intervals for the Chemistry and Hematology Labs. Assist in technical consultation to clinicians, researchers and campus research community.

• California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) License issued by the State Department of Health.
• No minimum education required.
• Extensive experience working in a human or veterinary clinical diagnostic laboratory.
• Experience establishing hematology and chemistry reference intervals using appropriate statistical methods.
• Experience with implementing, maintaining, and monitoring QA/QC programs for a diagnostic laboratory, including experience with Westgard Rules and their implementation.
• Experience writing/reviewing standard operating procedures.
• Supervisory skills to recruit, hire, train, coach, evaluate, assign tasks, motivate employees, and build staff morale.
• Skills to implement new test methodology and analyzers, including validation and appropriate reference interval generation for a diagnostic chemistry or hematology laboratory.

• Experience with assessing laboratory equipment, performing calibrations and minor repairs.
• Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices or American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnostician standards.
• Ability to perform collaborative clinical research using clinical laboratory diagnostics.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to a diverse group of people including faculty, researchers, clients, students, and staff.

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist Specialist supports the Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory by ensuring compliance with quality assurance standards, maintaining LIS/LIMS systems, and performing test validation and equipment verification in the Chemistry and Hematology sections. This position ensures the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results while supporting the department's mission of delivering high-quality diagnostic services, research, and teaching.

This position is integral to the overall operation of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. This position provides managerial assistance to the lab manager as well as high level technical consultation, implementation and management of the Laboratory Information System (LIS), ensures the respective labs meet quality assurance standards, assists in establishing and validating new tests, methodologies and reference intervals, and performs occasional diagnostic testing.
