Position: Public Safety Dispatcher Assistant (PUBL SFTY DISPATCHER AST)

Job Summary

The 911 Public Safety Dispatcher Trainee position serves as an entry-level classification in which individuals are trained to operate a variety of emergency communications equipment and perform duties within the 911 Communications Center and Realtime Crime Center. Employees begin under close supervision and receive comprehensive on-the-job training in call taking, dispatching, alarm and camera monitoring, and the operation of technical systems.

As trainees demonstrate increased competence, they are allowed greater independence and work under general supervision. To facilitate training, work assignments rotate frequently. Trainees are subject to daily observation reports (DOR) until they can successfully perform duties independently. This classification is differentiated from the 911 Public Safety Dispatcher, whose responsibilities include independently executing all dispatcher functions.

Upon successful completion of the P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Dispatcher Course, associated on-the-job training program and the twelve month probationary period, 911 Public Safety Dispatcher Trainees may be eligible for reclassification to the 911 Public Safety Dispatcher classification. The department will assess each trainee's progress within the first twelve (12) months of employment to determine if promotional standards have been achieved. Trainees who do not meet performance expectations or fail to achieve reclassification within twelve (12) months will be subject to termination.
