Under general direction of the Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Supervisor, the majority of this position will involve acting as a technical coordinator for the ECC and Urgent Care Services.
Responsibilities include:
- Facilitating scheduling of ECC and Urgent Care patients for appointments
- Answering client phone calls to determine if their pet needs to be seen emergently or urgently
- Facilitating transfer of cases from referring veterinarians when clinicians are not available
- Providing para veterinary technical support to the Small Animal ECC and Urgent Care Veterinarians

Recruitment period is one month: applicants will be screened after two weeks, then weekly. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire
- No minimum education requirement
- Experience working in a Small Animal Hospital as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant
- Experience with animal restraint and blood draws
- Experience communicating with clients and referring DVM
- Interpersonal communication and customer service skills to interact with individuals of varying ages and backgrounds to secure and provide information, resolve problems, and refer as needed
- Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license
- Experience in a small animal emergency or urgent care setting
- Strong organizational skills
- 60% - ECC and Urgent Care Service Support
- 40% - ECC and Urgent Care Technical Support
The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) provides clinical case material to support teaching programs in the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its objectives include training veterinary students and interns/residents, providing veterinary services to the public, serving as a referral center, and advancing veterinary medicine. The Small Animal Patient Critical Care and Emergency Service at VMTH provides 24/7 care for cats and dogs, with board-certified faculty specialists leading the team.
The ICU is staffed by board-certified specialists, staff veterinarians, residents, veterinary technicians, and students. Many technicians are members of the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians. The service is open to direct patient care and consultation as needed.
