Overview
Job Summary Under supervision of the Animal Care Supervisor, perform routine animal care tasks in the indoor animal colony with duties that include observing animals for abnormal behavior, health monitoring, feeding animals, and cleaning animal rooms and cages. Provide basic animal care, technical and experimental assistance, and routine project support services to research Principal Investigators (PIs). This includes performing technical laboratory animal procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment in the indoor nonhuman primate colony, such as monitoring health condition and performing technical procedures.
The incumbent will work under minimal supervision in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, industry standards governing animal research (NIH/OLAW/AAALAC) and all safety procedures according to NIH standards and SOPs. Familiarity with regulations and policies to ensure animals receive appropriate care to promote physical and psychological well-being and minimize discomfort. Employee is required to work with animals (nonhuman primates) that are either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as HIV, SIV, Herpes B virus.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- No minimum education required
- Six months to one year of relevant work experience in animal care or an equivalent combination of education and training. Experience in animal care husbandry duties, including care, feeding, handling of laboratory animals; knowledge of biology and physical characteristics of animals used in research. Ability to handle laboratory animals in a manner that avoids injury to self or animals, and to exercise basic animal care principles related to disease control, sanitation and environmental enrichment.
Ability to recognize changes in animal physical appearance or behavior and to make accurate observations. - Skills to handle laboratory animals safely and to describe and record observations, calculations, and findings clearly and accurately. Knowledge of animal-related SOPs to record data in compliance with GLP guidelines.
- Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certifications or equivalent experience. Eligible to obtain certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by AALAS within one year from date of hire.
- Experience in specialty areas such as nonhuman primate facilities, barrier, hazard containment and animal facility.
- Knowledge of NIH, OLAW, USDA regulations and AALAS practices and protocols pertaining to primate non-human animal models. Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize changes in animal appearance or behavior. Effective written and verbal communication skills to convey complex technical issues to colony management and researchers, with collaboration and customer service orientation.

The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit conducting interdisciplinary research on significant human health problems, using nonhuman primates as animal models. The CNPRC is also committed to teaching and service.
