Position: Animal Health Technician - Primate Medicine (ANML HEALTH TCHN 3)

Job Summary

#CA-PS Under the direction of Staff Veterinarians, provide medical, dental, surgical, anesthesia and technical support in the care of non‑human primates. Duties include performing medical and dental procedures, initiating emergency treatments, inducing and maintaining anesthesia for surgical procedures, providing acute and emergency critical intensive care procedures, venipuncture, catheterization, intubations and wound management, and supporting procedures such as endoscopy, surgery and laparoscopy.

Record therapeutic orders, prescribed treatments and complete work orders for project animals. Maintain drug stock levels, equipment, and records on usage and hospitalized animals. Ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines to promote animal well‑being, work under minimal supervision in compliance with federal, state and local regulations, industry standards (NIH/OLAW/AAALAC) and safety procedures. May work with animals infected with HIV/SIV or other experimental agents.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Animal Technologist (LATG) or American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) technician certification:
    Assistant Laboratory – Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT). Must complete ALAT within one year of employment and be willing to complete the LATG certification program.
  • No minimum education required.
  • Advanced experience in veterinary nursing procedures and acute medical, emergency and critical intensive care of laboratory animals, including venipuncture, catheterization, wound management, oral‑gastric intubation, basic pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and controlled drug policy. Experience performing complex medical procedures under veterinary guidance, GLP, and SOAP.
  • Ability to triage multiple clinical cases independently, initiate emergency or critical care, and perform anesthesia induction and maintenance. Experience with standard veterinary medical procedures such as venipuncture, IV catheterization, gastric incubation, endotracheal or gastric intubation, wound healing, bandaging, and emergency treatments.
  • Provide technical support for endoscopy, surgery and laparoscopy; manage a digital radiology imaging system; perform advanced radiology techniques; recognize changes in primate behavior or appearance.
  • Troubleshoot diverse medical equipment (radiology units, film processor, anesthetic machine, autoclave, dental equipment, digital camera, EKG, pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor, nebulizer, fiber optic endoscope, bronchoscope). Knowledge of USDA regulations, Animal Welfare and AALAS protocols for primate research.
  • Applied knowledge of non‑human primate behavior, social structure, enrichment, handling, training, and basic computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license in California.
  • Experience in an animal research facility with potentially hazardous diseases.
  • Experience assessing primates for physical/behavioral abnormalities.
  • Experience initiating emergency medical treatment of primates.
  • Specialization in primate dental procedures (x‑rays, pulpotomies, pulpectomies, extractions, oral surgical assistance).
  • Experience in BSL‑2 or BSL‑3 biohazard containment procedures.

Department Overview

The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit conducting interdisciplinary research on human health problems using non‑human primates. The Primate Center also supports teaching and service missions. This position provides medical and technical support to veterinary staff and CNPRC investigators in Primate Medicine. May work with animals/tissues infected with biohazardous agents such as HIV, SIV, measles, and others.
