- Under general supervision of the Large Animal Clinic Patient Care Manager and Equine surgeons, provide technical support for the Equine Surgery Receiving services and other Large Animal Clinic services.
- Coordinate the receiving and surgery schedule for faculty, residents and interns daily.
- Act as a liaison between client services staff and equine surgery coordinator to facilitate incoming and hospitalized patients.
- Facilitate daily caseload with support services (e.g., advanced imaging, operating room, farrier) to ensure efficient service operations.
- Receive, handle, and restrain patients (equines, llamas, and alpacas).
- Assist in the Large Animal Operating Room with Equine Surgery patients; prepare patients for anesthesia induction; position patients for surgeries; sterile prep; assist surgeons during major and minor surgeries.
- Collect samples, perform diagnostic testing, administer medical treatments, monitor patients, and maintain accurate medical records.
- Assist clinical students with treatments and teach best practices for routine and emergency care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
- No minimum education required.
- Experience and skill in handling, restraining, and working with horses of all types and temperaments; ability to move quickly with fractious horses and anticipate potential problems to ensure safety and effectiveness of restraint.
- Experience with aseptic technique, medication administration, fluids commonly used in equines, dose calculations, bandaging and wound care, basic technical diagnostic and patient care procedures.
- Experience with equine husbandry, anatomy, behavior, and basic physiology; identify abnormal signs.
- Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with clients, clinicians, students, and staff.
- Ability to recognize and handle difficult or unpleasant situations and/or individuals.
- Current CA Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
- Experience using VMACS.
- Skill to perform emergency care procedures and provide technical assistance during life-threatening situations; manage treatment apparatus (fluid therapy catheters, urinary catheter, nasogastric tubes, IV pumps, BP monitors, etc.).
- Knowledge of endoscopy procedures and equipment.
- 90% – Equine Surgery Service Technical Support and Patient Care
- 10% – Infection and Sanitation Control
- Salary range: $27.51/hr – $36.03/hr
