A research opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), located in Davis, California. The ARS is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to solve agricultural problems from field to table. ARS delivers tools and solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support nourishment, sustain agroecosystems and natural resources, and ensure economic competitiveness and excellence in agriculture.
Research Project
The Pollinator Health Research Unit seeks a postdoctoral fellow to apply biotechnological approaches to improve health and resilience of managed honey bees. The fellow will contribute to projects focused on therapeutics development and discovery of bioactive compounds that mitigate stressors such as parasites and pathogens. Activities include molecular/cellular biology, biotechnology, and chemical biology related to honey bee health. Some field research may be required and will involve handling managed honey bee colonies.
The fellow will work independently and with a multidisciplinary team, contribute to experimental design and data analysis, publish findings, and communicate results to scientific and stakeholder audiences.
Learning Objectives
This fellowship provides opportunities to develop an independent research profile and contribute to applied solutions for pollinator health. Areas of learning include:
- Field and Laboratory Study Setup and Maintenance
- Honey Bee Sample Collection and Analysis
- Preparation of Laboratory Materials
- Safe Handling of Laboratory Materials
- Data Documentation and Record-Keeping
- Summarizing and Interpreting Research Results
Through these activities, the fellow will expand knowledge in honey bee biology, biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, and data analysis.

Anticipated Start Date

Appointment Length
The appointment will initially be for two years.
Level of Participation
The appointment is full time.
Stipend
The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Anticipated stipend ranges from $82,000-$99,300 annually.
