Research Scientist
Position Overview
Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis. The position is supported by the CLEAR Center under the mentorship of Prof. Frank Mitloehner and focuses on advancing sustainable systems for food production. The contract is for two years with renewal potential based on performance and funding. Salary range: $69,073‑$82,836.
Responsibilities- Develop Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and economic models to determine resource demands and environmental impacts of milk and beef production at regional and national scales.
- Identify best practices and methods for circularity and valorizing waste and byproducts in agriculture and livestock systems.
- Assist in measuring and modeling emissions (e.g., volatile organic compounds) from livestock farms, including feed production, enteric fermentation, and manure management.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
- Process, analyze, and interpret data; prepare project reports, peer‑reviewed publications, and presentations.
- Ph.D. in Animal or Environmental Sciences, Agricultural or Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Expertise in carbon accounting principles and ISO‑compliant LCA methods.
- Experience developing consequential LCA models for beef and dairy products.
- Proficiency with R software for statistical analysis.
- Strong background in multivariate statistics and independent LCA studies of agricultural and livestock systems.
- Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills; team‑oriented perspective.
- Preferred: experience with techno‑economic analysis of animal farms, LCA software such as Simapro, databases such as Ecoinvent.
- Experience with measurements and modeling of emissions from animal farms.
