The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a 50-percent time Junior Specialist position in enzyme purification and kinetic analysis in the Enoch Baldwin Lab.
Research responsibilities (90%)- Perform reliable kinetic analyses of
E. coli CTP synthetase (EcCTPS) to understand regulation by small molecule substrates, products, and inhibitors. - Carry out purifications of wild-type and mutant EcCTPS proteins.
- Use spectrophotometric methods to assay EcCTPS multiple activities.
- Prepare and standardize assay reagents and buffers using standard analytical methods.
- Work up and analyze experimental data, familiarizing with both published and unpublished lab work.
- Collaborate with the Principal Investigator to design, execute, and interpret experiments, formulate new hypotheses, and conduct subsequent experiments.
- Archive data electronically and create written descriptions and publication-quality figures for any publishable data.
- Complete the data required for an ongoing body of work for publication and perform any follow-up that arises from manuscript review within the hiring period.
- Meet regularly with the PI; schedule not exceeding 20 hours per week.
- Maintain lab cleanliness and order.
- Inventory critical lab materials.
- Monitor compliance with safety regulations.

Qualifications Basic qualifications- Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or equivalent with at least 6 months of prior lab experience.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize responsibilities, interpersonal communication skills, decision-making skills, and independent work capability.
- Previous experience assaying and analyzing data for enzyme kinetic analysis.
- Experience making buffers and performing standard biochemical calculations.
- Capable of maintaining a detailed laboratory notebook, organizing electronic files, and documenting data for publication and presentations.
- Willingness to carry out complex, time-critical experiments, some lasting up to four hours of continuous work.
- Flexibility and willingness to expand skill set.
- Demonstrated expertise in assaying CTP synthetase or a similar enzyme using spectrophotometry.
