Position Overview

The CLEAR Center is seeking to hire one Junior Specialist to provide technical, scientific, and organizational assistance to Dr. Frank Mitloehner’s CLEAR Center in the Department of Animal Science. The Center focuses on environmental sustainability in animal agriculture, quantifying and mitigating air‑ and climate‑pollutants from cattle, swine, and poultry production.

Salary Range

A reasonable estimate for this position is $57,000–$60,700.

Position Description

The position provides technical, scientific, and organizational assistance to the CLEAR Center’s research on reducing emissions from livestock and poultry. It involves designing protocols, conducting trials in UC Davis facilities (primarily dairy work), and supporting field and laboratory data collection.

Responsibilities
  • Research (70%):
    Coordinate and help conduct trials at UC Davis Animal Science Research and Teaching Facilities, develop protocols and standard operating procedures for animal feeding trials, schedule and train student interns, assist in data collection and sample preparation, maintain lab equipment, attend lab meetings, and report progress to graduate students, sponsors, and the principal investigator.
  • Professional Competence and Activity (15%):
    Participate in relevant societies and groups, assist with journal manuscript preparation, conduct literature searches, and discuss data with the PI.
  • University and Public Services (15%):
    Train undergraduate interns and lab staff, complete outside documentation or project management as needed, attend conferences or events, and participate in outreach or social media content creation.
Qualifications

Basic qualifications:

  • Upon Start of Work, Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Animal Biology, Animal Science and Management, Agricultural and Environmental Technology, Environmental Science and Management, Biology, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field.

Additional qualifications:

  • Experience working with animals such as cattle.
  • Demonstrated multitasking ability and flexibility between projects.
  • Willingness and interest to learn new techniques.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and statistical software.
  • Organizational skills: maintaining records, keeping supplies stocked, updating inventories, and maintaining safety records and training.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team and assist/train laboratory members and student interns in safety and research protocols.
  • Ability to conduct library and database searches.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with farm equipment such as tractors and bobcats.
  • Proficiency with techniques on live animal trials.
  • Leadership experience, including leading teams.
  • Experience handling large data sets.
