Position: Environmental Health and Safety Specialist (EHS SPEC 3 RX)

Overview

UC Davis Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is committed to providing a safe environment for campus students, employees, faculty, and visitors. This position manages the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) compliance program and supports the hazardous materials and hazardous waste programs. The Specialist will participate in the department daily and after-hours on-call team to provide technical information and response to the campus community.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER Training Certificate.
  • Valid CA commercial driver s license with Haz Mat endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Valid California driver s license and acceptable driving record; may enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • Bachelor s degree in chemistry, environmental health, occupational health, environmental toxicology, biological sciences, public health, or similar discipline; other academic backgrounds with relevant work experience will be considered.
  • Experience conducting and coordinating audits, investigations, evaluations, and timely corrective actions.
  • Experience interpreting Federal and State Regulations (e.g., 10 CFR, 40 CFR, 8 CCR, 17 CCR, 22 CCR, 24 CCR, 26 CCR, 13 CCR, California Vehicle Code, Hazardous Waste Operations procedures, NRC Radiation License).
  • Experience in forklift operation, ability to drive a manual transmission truck, and to use drum dollies and pumps for transferring liquids.
  • Technical writing skills to develop detailed compliance and environmental assessment reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to interpret new regulations and develop compliance procedures; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to convey technical information in lay terms; provide training and educational programs; develop detailed compliance reports and correspondence.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or ability to obtain CHMM within 6 months.
  • Two to five years of relevant industrial hygiene experience with focus on asbestos and lead, hazard assessments, and exposure sampling.
  • Skills to perform calculations for radioactive decay, package limits, disposal limits, toxicity of mixtures, and drum contents.

Note:

This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State laws and University policy. Valid CA driver s license required; DMV record may be requested. This is a safety sensitive position and may require participation in the DMV Pull Notice System and DOT drug/alcohol testing. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials and, in some cases, infectious agents in BSL-1/BSL-2 facilities.
