COLLECTIONS SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN I/II DEFINITION

Under immediate (Collections Systems Technician I) or general (Collections Systems Technician II) supervision, p performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work of sewers, pump stations, streets, maintenance holes, collection pipelines, storm drains, drainage channels, access roads, and related public works facilities; operates and maintains light and moderately heavy power driven equipment; installs and repairs underground sewer pipes;

removes blockages from sewer and storm drain lines; and performs related work as required.

Receives immediate (Collections Systems Technician I) or general (Collections Systems Technician II) supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. Collections Systems Technicians II’s may provide technical and functional supervision while working in the field, as well as training to lower level staff.

This is the entry-level classification in the Collections Systems Technician series. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform maintenance and repair duties related to the City’s collections system. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates the skill to perform the work independently. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Collections Systems Technician II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.

Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

This is the fully qualified journey-level classification in the Collections Systems Technician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Collections Systems Technician I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Positions in the Collections Systems Technician class series are flexibly staffed. Positions at the Collections Systems Technician I level normally are filled by advancement from the Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II class, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience in the construction and maintenance of streets, sewers, and public works related facilities. Positions at the Collections Systems Technician II level normally are filled by advancement from the Collections Systems Technician I level;

progression to the Collections Systems Technician II level is dependent on (i) management affirmation that the position is performing the full range of duties assigned to the classification; (ii) satisfactory work performance; (iii) the incumbent meeting the minimum qualifications for the classification including any licenses and certifications; and (iv) management approval for progression to the Collections Systems Technician II level.

• Performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work of sewers, pump stations, streets, maintenance holes, collection pipelines, storm drains, drainage channels, access roads, and related public works facilities.
• Operates and maintains a variety of vehicles, light and heavy equipment, power tools, and other equipment including motorized and hydraulic equipment, jackhammers, sewer rodder, hydraulic jet cleaner, hydraulic vacuum truck, front loader, backhoe, CCTV truck, and related equipment.
