Program Description

Summer Sampler and Backyard Adventures are separate day camps under the Outdoor Education programs for the City of Davis. Summer Sampler offers a mix of activities inspired by other city camps. Backyard Adventures focuses on scavenger hunts, bug catching, camp stories, team games, and biking to UC Davis’ Riparian Reserve at Putah Creek. Both camps include biking and swimming.

Position Responsibilities
  • Provide a fun‑filled, safe, structured, and comfortable environment for all participants.
  • Plan, oversee, and evaluate all camp‑related activities.
  • Supervise camp staff, volunteers, and youth participants.
  • Coordinate daily program activities, including arts, crafts, sports, games, and cooking.
  • Communicate with parents regarding behavior, injuries, and other matters.
  • Render first aid as necessary.
  • Attend and facilitate weekly volunteer meetings.
  • Ensure equipment and facilities are safe, prepared, and maintained.
  • Maintain clean and organized work environments.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff and community members.
Daily Tasks (Typical)
  • Lead staff and volunteer morning meeting to prep for the day.
  • Check‑in campers on the first day, communicate with parents, and confirm emergency forms.
  • Introduce staff and volunteers to campers and explain camp rules.
  • Bicycle with the camp group to daily activity locations.
  • Keep time for activity rotations keeping staff and volunteers on track.
  • Check‑out campers each day, ensuring correct pickup and accounting.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years or older or possess high‑school completion equivalency.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
  • Certified in CPR and Standard First Aid prior to program start.
  • Ability to swim at a water‑safe level and participate in pool activities.
  • High energy, enthusiasm, and creativity.
  • Effective communication and relationship‑building skills with staff and community members.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Ability to motivate and lead staff, volunteers, and youth participants.
  • Complete required online trainings before program start — Concussion, Blood‑Born Pathogens, Mandated Reporter, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heat Illness, Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.
Physical/Sensory Requirements

Work outdoors in varied environmental conditions. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Requires verbal, hearing, and visual acuity. Exposure to heat (often >100°F), sun, noise, dust, pollen, slip hazards, and potential blood‑borne pathogens may occur.
