Academic Coach / Mentor

Reports to: Note:
This position is funded through contracted funds. Employee supervision is assigned under contractual agreement to the Trotwood City Schools.

Job Objectives: Performs a variety of classroom support to help students achieve productive learning experiences in high school.

Position Type: Full-time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Responsibilities
  • Check with the teacher for instructions, work with small groups and/or individual students, and seek advice when expectations are unclear.
  • Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Promote a favorable image of the school district.
  • Help students with remedial and/or enrichment activities, reinforce instructional materials introduced by the teacher, and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Offer help when students ask or their behavior suggests they need assistance; avoid being intrusive, and solve student concerns discreetly.
  • Support an inclusive educational environment and help students with disabilities participate in appropriate peer group activities as directed.
  • Respect personal privacy and maintain confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Take precautions to ensure student safety; do not leave students unsupervised.
  • Maintain high standards and uphold the student conduct code.
  • Promote the proper use and care of school property; report student discipline problems, vandalism, and other related concerns.
  • Report evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
  • Mentor students weekly to set behavior and academic goals.
  • Meet with teachers during plan time to review student progress.
  • Monitor classroom behavior and performance daily.
  • Act as first line of behavior intervention.
  • Conduct seminars for success twice per nine weeks:
  • Connecting behavior and attitude to academic performance
  • Connecting academic skills with postsecondary goals
  • Academic planning
  • Communicate weekly with parents/guardians about student progress.
  • Assist in transition to classes, morning entry, dismissal, and lunch duty.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test).
  • Provides documented evidence of a clear criminal record.
  • Holds or is qualified to obtain an Educational Aide Permit.
  • Self‑directed and able to learn required skills for the position.
  • Congenial disposition and strong interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions
  • Potential exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
  • Interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.
  • May require operating and/or riding in a vehicle.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal temperature extremes.
  • May require extended time using a computer terminal and keyboard.
  • Requires considerable telephone contact and paperwork.
  • Requires working under time constraints to meet deadlines.
  • May require working during evening and/or weekend.
