Job Responsibilities

  • Assist the annual NERC TPL-001 Transmission System Planning Performance Assessment using steady-state, short-circuit, and dynamics power systems techniques utilizing a software suite of TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, and DSA Tools as governed by FERC 715.
  • Assist with documentation for the assessment required by NERC EOP-005 System Restoration from Black start Resources using transient power systems techniques utilizing PSCAD.
  • Assist with documentation for the annual NERC CIP-014 Physical Security assessment modeling realistic and historical physical attacks on transmission equipment to determine if said physical attack could result in instability, uncontrolled separation, or cascading within an electrical interconnection utilizing a software suite of TARA, PSS®E, and DSA Tools.
  • Assist with or perform NERC FAC-002 qualified changes and material modification impact studies to determine if any new or materially modified load, generation, or transmission results in an inability of the transmission system to meet the performance requirements of FERC 715 using applicable steady-state, short-circuit, dynamic, and transient power systems techniques and a software suite of TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, DSA Tools, and PSCAD as governed by FERC 715.
  • Assist with the evaluation of the optimization of the transmission system and proposed transmission plans to reduce overall investment driving downward pressure on electric rates utilizing traditional and new relevant technologies such as GETs.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings, plan and evaluate MISO’s regional transmission planning process, the MISO Expansion Transmission Plan (MTEP), and the Expedited Project Review (EPR) and Expediate Resource Adequacy Study (ERAS) to ensure effective, efficient, and thorough evaluation of transmission projects, ensuring just and reasonable transmission scope using steady-state, short-circuit, dynamics, and transient power systems techniques and a software suite of TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, DSA Tools, and PSCAD as governed by FERC 715.
  • Collaborate among Indiana’s five vertically integrated investor‑owned utilities and two generation & transmission cooperatives to establish a cost-effective forecasted transmission plan that reliably serves existing and new Indiana customers.
  • Prepare for and defend against regulatory audits of entities including but not limited to NERC, IURC, FERC, and MISO for adherence to transmission tariffs, distribution tariff, and NERC compliance.
  • Provide the transmission operations control center assistance in times of emergency such as extreme weather events, emergency repairs, or system restoration to ensure a timely return to energization of AES Indiana’s customers.
  • Assist with documentation of tasks associated with NERC standards including but not limited to TPL-007, TPL-008, FAC-003, FAC-010, FAC-011, FAC‑014, PRC-012, and PRC-026 using steady-state, short-circuit, and dynamics power systems techniques and a software suite of TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, DSA Tools, and PSCAD as needed.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar.
Highly Desired Skills
  • Bachelor's degree, certificate or equivalent experience in power systems studies.
  • Passing grade on Fundamentals of Engineering.
  • Proficiency in report writing, analysis, and compliance procedures.
  • Detailed understanding of regulatory frameworks (NERC, FERC, PJM/MISO).
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Proven technical knowledge and understanding of transmission grid.
  • Proficiency with PSSE, TARA, DSA Tools, or similar software.
  • Proficiency with ASPEN, CAPE, or similar software.
  • Proficiency with PSCAD or similar software.
