The AFRL Foundational Technologies Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level General Engineer (0801), Materials Engineer (0806), Mechanical Engineer (0830), Electronics Engineer (0855), or related job series to serve as an Advanced Concepts Engineer in the Functional Systems Manufacturing Branch (REME) of the Manufacturing, Industrial Technologies, and Energy Division (REM). This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12/13 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.
PositionDuties Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Applies knowledge of and experience in materials science to provide detailed and authoritative technical recommendations to establish, improve, and preserve defense essential manufacturing capabilities for AF weapon systems.
- Identifies and addresses manufacturing process improvements at the substrate, device, subcomponent, subsystem, and/or system levels.
- Engages the defense industrial base, non-traditional businesses, AFRL, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), and other Services/Agencies to prioritize needs, identify solutions, and optimize manufacturing efforts that address Air Force weapon system production issues.
- Develops and executes multi-year roadmaps to mature manufacturing technologies and processes that will reduce the acquisition and supportability costs of weapon systems.
- Leads Interagency teams and fosters government/industry partnerships to advance manufacturing needs.

- To qualify for a DR-02, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the DR-01/GS-11 (or equivalent pay system).
- Position will be filled using occupational series within the Scientist and Engineering career field. Applicants are required to meet all OPM Qualification Standard requirements for the applicable occupational series and grade.
- Ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI clearance as a condition of employment.
- This is a Drug Testing designated position. The incumbent will be subject to random testing.
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.
- Must be APDP certified at the Foundational level in Engineering & Technical Management (ETM) or obtain certification within 36 months.
- Possess a graduate degree in engineering or scientific field of study from an accredited academic institution.
- Hands-on experience working with fixed-wing weapon systems.
- Familiarity with the manufacture of state-of-the-art polymer matrix composite structures and subcomponents.
- Experience managing technical, schedule and financial aspects of large or complex projects.
- Demonstrated ability to transition technologies to industry and government customers.
- Evidence of ability to successfully lead diverse technical teams to achieve organizational goals.
- Familiarity with RF electrical properties and materials interactions.
- Familiarity with metallic corrosion impacting fielded weapon systems and design/mitigation strategies.
- Familiarity with manufacturing of canopy transparencies.
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
