Overview
Position: Patient Care Tech
Department: Medical Inpatient
Shift: 7AM-7:30PM / Part-time / 24 hours per week / 48 hours per pay period
Facility: Miami Valley Hospital
A Patient Care Technician, or PCT, works with nurses and doctors to care for patients. Tasks typically include:
- Check things like temperature, heartbeat, and breathing.
- Help patients move around, get dressed, and eat.
- Collect samples like urine.
- Report any changes in a patient’s condition to a nurse.
- Assist with patient walks, hygiene, weighing patients, and vitals.
The PCT works under the supervision of a nurse, who ensures safe and correct performance of duties. The role may also involve assisting with paperwork and other tasks that help the hospital run smoothly, and is sometimes referred to as a Unit Clerk or Health Unit Coordinator (HUC).
PCTs are essential members of the healthcare team who help patients feel better and get healthy again.
EducationYou'll need a high school diploma or GED.
TrainingYou’ll need to obtain a BLS CPR certificate
. If you don’t already have it, CPR can be taught at orientation.
No previous job experience is required, but you should meet one of the following:
- Finished STNA, CNA, or Patient Care Technician/Assistant training.
- Have cared for patients in the past 5 years (e.g., taking temperature, bathing, or helping with restroom).
- Are currently in nursing school and have finished one clinical rotation.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while remaining courteous when interrupted.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Good organization skills.
- Effective communication—talking and listening well to others.
- Bonus: prior hospital experience.
