Day Shift Supervisor – Behavioral Health Technicians (BHT)

Compassion Care Group Residential Treatment Facility – Dayton, OH

Position Overview

Facility: Compassion Care Group Residential Treatment Facility

Location: Dayton, OH

Status: Full-Time salaried

Shift: M-F 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM 1 weekend day after 3rd weekend.

Reports To: Program Director

Supervises: Approximately 6-8 Behavioral Health Technicians per shift

On-Call/Coverage: On-call and/or coverage as needed for staffing shortages, emergencies, and operational needs (including potential weekend/holiday support)

Position Summary

The Day Shift Supervisor serves as the frontline leader and provides operational oversight for day-shift Behavioral Health Technicians in a residential treatment program serving youth ages 10–18. This role is responsible for ensuring a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment by maintaining a consistent presence on the unit, managing Behavioral shift operations, coaching staff in real time, overseeing documentation quality, and supporting the training, development, and performance evaluation of team members.

As the primary leader during the day shift, the Supervisor serves as the primary escalation point and works in close partnership with the Program Director.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Shift Operations & Hands-On Unit Leadership

  • Lead daily shift start-up, including assignments, census review, risk alerts/precautions, and setting priorities for the day.
  • Maintain high visibility on the unit during peak activity times (such as transitions, activities, meals, and visits).
  • Provide immediate support during escalations and ensure appropriate follow-through and communication.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of program structure, rules, and behavior support expectations.
  • Coordinate breaks and coverage to maintain safe supervision ratios and consistent programming.

2. Supervision, Coaching & Staff Development (6 BHTs/Shift)

  • Provide in-the-moment coaching, modeling, and feedback to strengthen staff skills and consistency.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one check-ins and structured observations to reinforce expectations and support growth.
  • Support onboarding of new BHTs, including orientation, competency check-offs, and shadowing plans.
  • Lead brief shift “skill refreshers” on topics like documentation standards, communication norms, and professionalism.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and hands-on support.

3. Performance Management & Evaluation

  • Monitor performance and address concerns promptly through coaching and documentation, in accordance with policy.
  • Provide evaluation input and documentation to the Program Director, noting observations, strengths, and areas for improvement.
  • Participate in performance improvement planning, follow-up, and recognition of strong performance.
  • Track recurring issues such as attendance, documentation quality, and professionalism, and elevate trends as needed.

4. Safety, Compliance & Documentation Oversight

  • Ensure staff follow facility policies, safety protocols, and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure shift documentation is accurate and completed on time, including shift logs, incident documentation, notes, and required checklists.
  • Conduct spot-check audits and address documentation issues through coaching and retraining.
  • Support compliance readiness and participate in internal reviews as assigned.

5. Communication & Coordination

  • Act as the day shift point-of-contact for BHT questions, unit coordination, and operational decisions.
  • Ensure consistent shift handoffs and continuity across shifts.
  • Provide timely updates to the Program Director regarding incidents, staffing challenges, and unit needs.
  • Participate in meetings and collaborate with other facility leaders as assigned.
