Slitter Operator

Overview

The slitter operator position is responsible for operating a machine to slit continuous lengths of laminated paper and film products into specified widths that meet customer specifications.

• Adjusting blades according to width specified on slitting work order and setting up run speeds; adjust guides, loading or unloading of material as required through the machine.
• Install spacers to adjust spacing to specified tolerances and cores in arbors.
• Operate the machine and observe the flow of material through the machine to detect defects, irregular cutting and/or winding of material; use control panel (start/stop, speed, side tension, down pressure, break tension).
• Follow slitting job order instructions regarding packing, splice specifications, core diameter, rewind directions, splicing, length and width of the cuts.
• Thread the web through the slitter and verify dimensions of cuts to specifications using a tape measure.
• Observe slitting and rewinding operation and examine clean slit cuts.
• Report any necessary maintenance of the machine, and any unsafe working conditions to management.
• Comply with safety regulations and maintain an orderly work area.
• Cross-training in packing of materials.
• Tow motor/forklift certification training as required.

• High School Diploma or GED
• Tow Motor/Forklift experience preferred
• Previous manufacturing experience preferred
• Previous machine operator experience in slitting or similar is highly desirable
• Ability to read a tape measure in millimeters and inches, blueprints, and drawings
• Must be able to follow written and oral instruction
• Must be able to work overtime including short-notice requests
• Possess basic math skills

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. The ability to recognize and evaluate technical issues and limitations is required. The ability to define and manage expectations is critical. The ability to make sound decisions and actions is required. Ability to assess risk associated with product compliance and regulation and awareness of when to communicate changes to risk.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms; sit, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 85 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
