Department Leadership and Daily Operations
- Lead daily finishing/slitting operations across assigned equipment, including slitters, rewinders, laminators, sheeters, and related converting equipment.
- Coordinate staffing, priorities, equipment assignments, material flow, and shift activities to meet production schedules and customer requirements.
- Ensure work orders, product specifications, measurements, packaging requirements, labeling instructions, and production schedules are reviewed and followed.
- Monitor departmental performance, including output, downtime, scrap, rework, quality defects, efficiency, labor utilization, and schedule attainment.
- Maintain a visible leadership presence on the production floor to support operators, remove barriers, and ensure operational discipline.
- Lead shift communication and handoffs to ensure production status, priorities, quality issues, material concerns, staffing gaps, and maintenance needs are clearly understood.
- Reinforce and enforce all company safety policies, machine safety expectations, PPE requirements, SOPs, and 5S practices.
- Ensure employees are trained and working safely around slitting equipment, rewinders, blades, shafts, cores, lifting equipment, material handling equipment, and finished rolls.
- Identify, report, and elevate hazards, unsafe behaviors, equipment concerns, or near-miss conditions.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment consistent with company housekeeping, 5S, and environmental expectations.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, quality standards, safety requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Ensure finished products are slit, inspected, packaged, labeled, and prepared in accordance with internal standards and customer specifications.
- Verify that operators are properly inspecting finished rolls or sheets during and after processing to confirm compliance with quality expectations.
- Monitor and address quality issues, including incorrect width, roll defects, poor winding, telescoping, wrinkles, contamination, damaged material, labeling errors, packaging issues, or nonconforming product.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of production records, quality checks, scrap reporting, downtime tracking, batch/product information, and related documentation.
- Partner with Quality to investigate defects, support corrective actions, reduce repeat issues, and improve customer satisfaction.
- Support machine setup, adjustments, troubleshooting, and issue resolution to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.
- Partner with Maintenance to elevate and resolve mechanical issues, recurring downtime, equipment concerns, and preventative maintenance needs.
- Ensure equipment is operated according to standard procedures and that abnormalities are identified and addressed promptly.
- Monitor equipment performance trends and recommend improvements to increase reliability, throughput, and efficiency.
- Train, coach, and develop finishing/slitting operators to ensure consistent execution of SOPs, quality standards, safety expectations, and production requirements.
- Provide clear direction, performance feedback, and accountability for attendance, productivity, quality, safety, teamwork, and adherence to company standards.
- Support skill development, cross-training, onboarding, and progression of employees within the finishing/slitting department.
- Address employee relations issues promptly and professionally in partnership with Human Resources and Plant Leadership.
- Foster a respectful, accountable, team-oriented work environment focused on safety, quality, customer service, and continuous improvement.
- Identify and implement improvements to reduce scrap, improve yield, shorten setup/changeover time, reduce downtime, and improve material utilization.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to standard work, workflow, labor efficiency, 5S, safety, quality, and cost reduction.
- Use production data, operator feedback, and performance trends to identify root causes and drive corrective action.
- Partner with Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, Planning, Supply Chain, and Shipping to improve departmental performance and customer delivery.
