Responsibilities
  • Monitors and interprets cardiac rhythms, vital signs, and other telemetry data; responds to abnormalities
  • Administers prescribed medications and treatments with a focus on cardiac care
  • Prepares equipment and assists physicians during cardiac-related procedures
  • Maintains patient comfort and safety for telemetry patients
  • Documents nursing history and physical assessment; notifies supervisor or physician of status
  • Responds to life-saving situations according to cardiac policies and protocols
  • Initiates patient education plans focusing on cardiac health, risk factors, and lifestyle modifications
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care
  • Maintains patient and client confidentiality
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of practice
  • Adheres to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards
Qualifications Required
  • One year of recent experience as a Stepdown RN
  • Current valid RN license in compliance with state regulations
  • Current BLS Certification (AHA/ARC)
  • Current ACLS Certification (AHA/ARC)
Preferred
  • Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) Certification
  • NIHSS Certification
  • Other certifications and licenses may be required for this position
Summary

A Stepdown Registered Nurse provides care to patients transitioning from intensive care to medical-surgical or general inpatient units. These patients require frequent monitoring and specialized nursing interventions. They assess and manage complex patient needs, administer medications and treatments, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, patient-centered care.

Essential Work Functions
  • Monitors and interprets cardiac rhythms and telemetry data; responds to abnormalities

  • Prepares equipment and aids physicians during cardiac-related procedures
  • Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of telemetry patients
  • Observes patient conditions and notifies supervisor or physician as needed
  • Responds to life-saving situations per cardiac protocols
  • Documents nursing history and assessments for telemetry patients
  • Initiates patient education plans tailored to cardiac health
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team for comprehensive care
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients and clients
  • Performs other duties as assigned within scope of practice
  • Adheres to hospital safety protocols and regulatory standards
Required Essentials Skills

  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions; PC skills proficiency
  • Physical Abilities - Able to remain stationary, move equipment (50-100 lbs), push, pull, and bend
  • Interpersonal Skills - Able to work with a variety of personnel with professionalism
  • Technical/Motor Skills - Ability to grasp, perform fine manipulation, push/pull, and move about during procedures
  • Mental Requirements - Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle irregular schedules
