The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Neurosurgery provides comprehensive, evidence-based care across both the operating room and outpatient settings. Working collaboratively with neurosurgeons and the interdisciplinary care team, the APP is an integral member of the neurosurgical service, supporting surgical procedures, patient evaluations, perioperative management, and longitudinal follow-up care. The APP plays a key role in improving patient access, enhancing continuity of care, and ensuring high-quality outcomes throughout the patient care journey.
Natureand Scope
- Provides advanced neurosurgical care in the clinic, operating room, and perioperative settings.
- Performs comprehensive patient assessments, develops treatment plans, and manages care in collaboration with supervising neurosurgeons.
- Assists in surgical procedures as a first assist and supports efficient operating room workflow.
- Facilitates patient access through timely evaluation of new referrals, pre-operative optimization, and post-operative follow-up care.
- Demonstrates strong clinical judgment, communication, and collaboration skills in a fast-paced surgical environment.
- Maintains quality, safety, and regulatory standards while delivering patient-centered care.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting outpatient evaluations for patients with spinal and cranial neurosurgical conditions.
- Assisting neurosurgeons in the operating room as a first assist.
- Performing pre-operative assessments, patient optimization, and surgical planning.
- Managing post-operative care, follow-up visits, and coordination of care.
- Reviewing diagnostic studies and collaborating with physicians to develop individualized treatment plans.
- Providing patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations.
- Supporting call coverage and addressing urgent patient needs as required.
- Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations in the outpatient setting.
- Evaluate new and established patients and develop treatment recommendations in collaboration with the supervising neurosurgeon.
- Assist in neurosurgical procedures as a first assist.
- Order, interpret, and act upon diagnostic testing, including laboratory studies and imaging.
- Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with licensure, certification, and collaborative agreements.
- Coordinate pre-operative preparation and post-operative management.
- Provide patient education and counseling regarding treatment plans and surgical expectations.
- Document all clinical services in the electronic medical record.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and adhere to professional and ethical standards.
- Previous neurosurgery, orthopedic spine, surgical specialty, or related APP experience preferred.
- Prior operating room experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in outpatient surgical specialty practice preferred.
- Knowledge of neurosurgical and spine conditions, treatment options, and perioperative management.
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to function effectively in both clinic and operating room environments.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, APPs, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
